'Naming and Shaming' would you?

What are peoples views on this?

Would you name and shame a person or do you think it's a low level to stoop to?

I dont mean for things such as innocent mistakes, but more recently things I have seen on facebook pages such as ragwort infested hay, despicable dealers, people who steal off other liveries, leaving horses to starve.. The real bad things..

What would you do?? :confused:
 
No I wouldn't. If you cant prove it, it could be libel. If you can prove it, they dont sound like very nice people, they might get their own back.

I would worry about the safety of my animals and family.

If they have committed a crime, report them the the police, if not then stay out of it.
 
I wish we could all warn each other so we didn't get 'taken in' or have the p*$$ taken out of us when we come to spending our hard earned money.

Before the Internet we would all usually have bought closer to home and know someone who knew the person we were buying from..... Now this isn't the case and buyer beware is definitely how we need to proceed. Isn't it sad though that if you trust people you can end up putting your life in danger or losing all your saving etc. You cant trust many steangers now-a-days :-(

But what if you do have proof but dont say anything and more horses / people will get hurt if they arent made aware?
 
If I was 100% sure of my facts, I had witnessed it myself & it was serious, & not an innocent mistake or accident, then yes. But it would need to be real conclusive proof, not stuff like naming & shaming a dealer because my friends sisters aunties instructor knew someone who's horse went lame. Tbh though, stuff like that I don't bother with Facebook for. I'd just say it to the persons face, & anyone I thought needed to know.
 
No, my horses/house/car are too vunerable.
If I see something I don't think is right I say something, (diplomaticly I hope) to the person concerned.
I would like to think someone gave me the chance to explain my actions before slagging me off, I'm remembering an old boy we looked after, who some days looked like a cruelty case, he was PTS after enjoying his last summer, knowing he was unlikely to last another winter
 
See my incident involved my horse - I have lots and lots of proof and I have since been told its not the first time its happened.

I personally dont like the naming and shaming - its seems to me like an olden day man hunt. But I do try and warn others if I see person 'X' commenting on their horse I will message and warn them - they probably think Im some fuddy-duddy and I've also warned a person on the new yard they are on to keep a VERY close eye on her.

Just curious really of what others think

Facebook pages aren't proof, thousands of other people will see them, and not everyone tell the truth. You might just get sucked into someone elses arguments.

If liveries are stealing, tell the YO. If horses are starving tell the RSPCA. Dont buy from suppliers of ragwort infested hay and quietly warn you friends.

I would agree with this. Buster who I finally lost a month ago would also have perhaps looked like a cruelty case some days but he was under the vet, had blood tests etc that all came back fine (top end of fine) and he was getting the best feed and supplements he could have. The vet said if anyone said anything to say that he was happy that we were doing the right thing to give the old boy a chance - but I could understand how someone who didn't know the context might have viewed him differently...
 
Unless it was absolutely proved in a Court of Law then no - idle chit chat is a dangerous thing and also severely resembles playground bullying. It is not my place to warn others about a possible incident that has not been proved and by doing so I could get myself in serious mire and open myself up to "she's the one that gossips about people" the messenger ALWAYS gets shot!
 
Depends.

I'd warn people I knew off however would be wary of naming and shaming publicly after my horse took a beating for me saying I'd go to the police over theft. They come top.

I'd be more inclined to report to police if necessary but anonymously.

I think it comes down to how much proof you have. I have reported someone for cruelty who I knew, & had witnessed their complete neglect & lack of compassion on several occasions first hand. I also knew their routine enough to know there wasn't a good explanation. And I don't mean different ideas, I mean blatent cruelty, enough that welfare got involved. At a later date, I also informed the seller of a pony who they'd made an offer to of their past history. Seller could check everything I'd said & refused to sell. However if I'd just seen their pony in the field looking rough one day, I wouldn't have ran round bad mouthing them.
