I have also posted this in The Tack Room, however thinking you guys might be able to advise on any naming protocols? I'm a bit clueless and google is not coming up with anything useful.

I am looking for some inspiration! My lovely new horse has no name on her passport, and I am absolutely useless with coming up with names. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I could register her as?

The dealer I bought her from *thinks* her stable name is Molly - that's what they used anyway. She is a grey 16hh ISH, her sire is Killea Hill View (Sire: Carrabawn View, Dam: Farrah) and her Dam is Aqua (Dam sire Kildalton Gold, Dam: Cailin Beag). As far as I can find she has one named full sibling called Kylnehone Cailin Killea. Kylnehone is where she was bred.

I have to send the Horse Sport Ireland people 4 choices. My initial (unimaginative thoughts) was something like: Killea Sea View or Kylnehone Sea View. Is there a naming protocol you should follow??

If anyone has any inspiration that would be fabulous!

Protocol to be observed: You don't use others prefix's or suffixes, so for example, you cannot use the 'Killea' as an opening or closing part of her name.

You could use Spookywood Sea View tho :)

I'm useless at naming otherwise :redface3: I hope others will help you out :)

I don't know if you could use her breeder's prefix unless they registered her name for you. Check HSI/her breeders to see what the regs are on that one. But you could broaden out the watery/hilly connection with something like Ocean Vista or Horizon or some such thing. One of my mares is in the same boat, and I've picked Shining Tor - her sire is Kyllachy, named for a Scottish mountainy moor, and her dam is Magic Peak. Shining Tor is in Cheshire, and is on a hilly moor that is connected to Alan Garner's magical children's books. Naming horses is great fun, and I wish you luck! She sounds lovely, by the way.

Has your house got a name or anything? As said you can't use those names as they belong to the studs unless you contact them and ask to use them. It's pretty weird she wasn't named anyway though if they were a decent enough stud. What reason was given for that? When was the passport issued?

Ahhh, I would love to be able to come up with a clever name like that, something that links her to her Sire and Dam lines. Thinking cap on! She is lovely, just a little stressed at the move but will hopefully settle in soon and we can get going.

Thanks for clarifying that I can't just use either of those prefixes. I am unsure why they didn't name her. The sticker on her passport says she can be named from 2 years old, so potentially she was sold before this and the new owner never had her named? Passport was issued in 2008 when she was a foal and has her breeders details listed. It's a blue passport with breeding.

Maybe they don't name them until they prove they're worthy of being associated lol

Do you want a name of your own or one that ties her to breeding / stud? Sometimes they're worth more if associated with a good stud.

Haha, yeah maybe! I would quite like something that links to her breeding lines. My imagination is just a bit rubbish for coming up with ideas! I emailed the HSI and they said I would need permission to use the Kylenahone prefix but they would happily ask the breeder for me, although I'm not too fixed on having that as a prefix as it's not like its a well known stud!

Nameless?

I had such a mare once, and she was as christian as any horse that God ever gave breath to! :)

Alec.

Here's hoping :D

Thank you all for your inspiration, much appreciated :)

Ok so my very short shortlist so far is:

Radharc Na Mara (Sea View in Irish - Thanks to QB for this one)
Silvermines Misty View or Silvermines Sea Mist (Mountain/Hill range in Tipperary where she was bred, Misty in ref to her mare and view her Sire)
Kylenahone Sea View (Breeders prefix if they allow me to use it)

Do these sound ok? Need one more to submit to the HSI.
