hello!

We decided on our foal's registered name well before she was born. Her stable name was chosen as one of a few possibles about a couple of weeks before she was born. we then decided that
the first choice of stable name would suit her so went with that.

bye!

So how do you chose "posh" names, from names back in the pedigree or something completely different? I am starting to think of names but don't know where to start, stable/pet names I think should be quite easy but their "posh" names - haven't a clue.

At the moment names are easy, the stallion I am using is called Zeus and fortunately Zeus seems to have had rather a lot of children!

Depending on which register they go in the names are either say ' **** bint/ibn Baikala' for the Arab register and some combination of the sire and dam name for the APHAs.

I had to register my foal with the letters beginning with a ,b,c for 2008 rules of the friesian studbook so had to choose before born so i did ACE for that
but i call him leo at home because i like it and it suits him better as i couldnt be seen calling him ace from field

To chose Curly's posh name, i first of all registered a prefix with the Central Prefix Register which i chose to be Curload as that is the hamlet i live in. The stallion we used was It's Without Doubt and so we were thinking of a second name meaning certainty or continuity or something like that. My husband is good with words and, given that Curload is on the Somerset Levels, thought up Onthelevel which covers the continuity aspect of the sire's name and is a bit of a play on where we live too.

For her shortened name, we just abbreviated Curload to get Curly!

I ideas in my head before the foal is born, but sometimes they dont suit, so I look around for inspiration after they are born. I like my foal's names to be conected to the dam name if possible. Usually the share the same initial letter.

For example I needed a filly name begining with C, and the sire was Tycoon, so a C name that wa slinked to money or wealth in some way. The filly was called Casiphia - which is hebrew for money, and her stable name is Casi

I have another mare whose foals names all start with De, so her 2008 colt is called Defiant. I was tyring to shorted Defiant to a stable name, so trying the letters Fi, Fe etc round in my head, and I started to go Fe, Fi, Fo, and that made me think of Jack and the beanstalk so his stable name is Jack.

My filly was four days old before she got a name!! I chose Callie after looking on girls names websites. My dad wasn't sure to begin with, but it really suits her and stuck. We didn't have any naming rules to follow.

Ah very good.

I think I'll probably wait to see what they are like for stable names but for "posh names" will need some planning. They will be registered with SHB(GB) so don't think I have to follow any rules with names/letters - do I? So a mixture of mum & dad's names could work or maybe pinch some names from further back in the pedigrees.

Our horses (the one's which haven't been already named) are named after cars (Dad is car mad). My SJ instructor calls my mare 'the Ferrari' so we decided to call her offspring after Ferrari's. Her registered name will be her own name with something in front or after it.

I have 2 Negretto daughters - one is called Negrita (stable name Rita) and the other is called Negrescha (stable name Twiglet!) as her dam sire is Don Schufro so wanted to reflect that.
Have another one by Faberge 50 officially called Faconnable but we call her Fabulous and I'll probably register her as that with BD when the time comes.
I also have a KWPN mare who was born in 2005 so her name had to begin with an A. Her 2009 foal's name will begin with an E.
Different breeds/stud books have different conventions.
I have 2 foals due for 2009: one by Being Bling out of Negrescha - an SH(GB) registered mare and one by Spielberg out of Amore - the KWPN mare. Any ideas for names for them appreciated!

My foals name was chosen well before birth. My prefix followed by Rubicon. Mum is called Rabatsa and dad is Icons Image. I wanted to follow on with the initial R but include the sire as well. Also breeding is a new venture for us and so the dictionary meaning of the word also applies.
The foal is registered with SHB(GB). I would have done it with the BWBS but they wanted to have the sires initial as the start of the name. We have a dairy herd and know how important the cow families are, and how easy it is to lose track if they dont follow on with the names!

Both our foals were named (both "posh" and stable name) after birth, with some "givens" for our ISH mare - I was keen to have either Blue or Diamond in the foal's name .... and when we saw the size of him, it had to be The Cullinan Diamond, as this was the largest gem quality diamond ever mined ...... The warmblood mare's foal was more difficult, but we still tried to reference the sire or dam line in some way, and played with lots of variations on the "Thunder" theme - but it was eventually the damline that gave us inspiration - from Arctic Que we got "Esquimaux". Stable names took quite a long time to emerge, we just had to study personality for some days - and I wanted the Irish connection if possible, so Fionn came out of that (from Fionn MacCumhail, the legendary Irish giant) - and I can't remember how we arrived at Tam!!! (Although we now think that he's more of a "Timothy")

The 2009 foal is much easier - sire is Amiro Z, dam Ballykett Blue Diamond, so its going to be either Amiro Blue or Amira Blue, depending on gender ..... stable name will wait till we see what we've got.

I am superstitious and actually do not name a foal until it is on the ground alive and kicking. It was something I picked up from a stud which I first used when I started breeding and have kept to it ever since.

Once on the ground, mostly stable names just happen it is their official names which take more time as I feel they are so important especially if you want future owners to keep the name later on.

Same here, i may have ideas bumbling around but until they are out and kicking and a bit of personality shines through they are unnamed.

I used to stand a stallion ages ago, so i used to have a list of names begining with his initial stashed in back of a book to look at for inspiration when the time came!

Now I just have one broodmare, but I've done the same thing, but because she's a PB trakehner, i've gone with the trak tradition of using the mare's initial...When I got really stuck I looked in the dictionary!!

I have a crystals them so mine all have the name of a crystal and then a theme. This year was dancing and I had two;

Crystalbank Danubrite Ballerina.......Ballet
and Danubrite Jazz.....Jazz

I write names down as I think of them, but no way do I name them until they are on the ground and kicking around. I sometimes take a few days whilst observing.

Stable name follows a theme which I seem to have bought into. My mare is Toffee, but we also have bought a Smarty and Lolly this year so decided to follow a sweetie theme, hence calling her Cookie.
I always wanted to use Fortune somewhere in her show name as that's how much she cost!
When she was born I contacted the stallion owner and asked permission to use part of his name (Fairlyn Gemini) and they were happy for me to do so, so I called her Gemini's Fortune.

I intend to use the sweetie theme for the next foal due 2010 so how about, Bonbon, Mars, Choccie?..... Worryingly OH likes Wine Gum.

All very interesting, I can understand the superstitious, I never change a horses name (even if I hate it) but you must think about what you might call them even if you don't "actually" name them before they are born.

Seems a lot of people take some initials from the dam's name.

Out of interest, how do you decide?

Are your names already chosen before foaling (registered and stable) or do you wait until they're born and choose a name then?

[/ QUOTE ]

Well you CAN'T really decide until they're born because you don't know the sex!!

Most of my mares now have 'themes' - which makes naming foals easier - although some just names themselves!

All mine have the stud prefix 'Indigo' to start with so 'colour' names don't work. Sometimes I include part of the stallion's name - or the mare's name - or ....

My 'common' mare is Dolly - she has had (so far) Tammy, Jolene and Denver (sadly, we lost Denver - so I can use that again!)

Then my ISH mare, Bazaar's Brook, has had Reflection, Ripple, River Rising, and Moon River.

Another ISH mare, Katie, had a real 'Charlie' of a foal and that led to Sally and Woodstock.

Rosebud's foals are to be named for miniature rose varieties - first one is Sweet Magic!

Etc. etc. etc.

It took me about 2 weeks to name my foal!! When I first put the mare in foal, we were all so excited and had names picked out weeks in advance, unfortunately the foal died during birth and we were all devastated. The mare went back in foal straight away and I spent the next 11 months in a state of paranoia, I didn't care what came out as long as both mare and foal were alive and healthy!! Thankfully it was a very easy birth and a lovely colt arrived. It took ages for a name to *find* him, I went with B because both the mare and stallion have names beginning with B so it just narrowed the options. Nothing seemed to suit until one day I came up with Basil, he turned around when I called him and it just suited him. Not sure about registered name yet, I don't have to give him one until he's a 2 year old so I have another year to decide!!!

I've only had to name one foal so far (but had years of experience registering puppies!). The mare's called Mellway Sea Pearl and the stallion Carnaval Pleasure. I had loads of names ready but none of them seemed right when I actualy looked at the foal. I wanted to keep some sort of theme going and originally considered nautical names because of the SEA PEARL thing. . . . . but it finally came to me one day at work . . . TREASURE - from PEARL and PLEASURE. I could use CARNAVAL as it's not a registered affix and Kevin (Cooper) said it was OK so she's Carnaval Treasure

We had an idea but waited until they were born before deciding...

Ours had to start with the first letter of the stallions name to register with BWBS....the stallion we used was Icon's Image so it had to be an 'I'

So we got our prefix of Foxfolly registered then put our thinking caps on...

The filly is Foxfolly Imagine... Ginny is her short name
The colt is Foxfolly Independance.... Dexter for short

Dexter was nearly Indestructable or Incognito as he was an undetected pregnancy, vet said not in foal!! But we thought indestructable might be tempting fate and Incognito was a bit of a mouthful, and he came out such an independant little sod that it stuck!!
