Well after my horse had time off he was allowed back into work 6 weeks ago. He started off really well and then had a issue with working on right rein. Spoke to my vet who referred my horse for physio. He was given 1 month of walking work out hacking to try and strengthen up his hind quarters as this was causing his right rein issue.

4 weeks down the line and we are now having issues getting him to hack out alone or in company. He spins, bolts, broncs and rears so as to not go anywhere. We only hack on off road hacking so traffic is never a concern thankfully. But the more you push him to get him to go the more he has a pandy and refuses. You do get him out a hack but you fight the whole time your on him.

Is this just him being a s*** and napping or could this be pain related?

Thanks for your help guys and wine and choccys if you got this far :D

It does sound pain related to me. Was your horse ok to hack out before the problems started? I would be going back to the vet and getting your horse referred for a full lameness workup. Presume teeth ok and saddle.

I thought perhaps pain related because he actually never a s*** when you ride him. And the one time he was he realised he wasnt getting off with it and carried on. But this time he just keeps saying no.

Teeth are fine vet checked them after we did some investigations first time before referred me to physio. And he said they were fine. Tack is fine and all been checked and causing no issue.

We had never hacked out until around 5 weeks ago. But he went out fine. No issues at all for weeks and weeks and then suddenly just started playing up. Its just not like him to play up and keep it up without there being pain somewhere. Sorry if that doesnt make any sense my head is thumpng with it all.

Left my vet a message to contact me about it so will see what he says when he gets back to me

It certainly sounds like a pain response. Does you physio do acupuncture? My horse had a course of acu for muscle wastage earlier this year. and she is moving better than ever, since I got her 2 1/2 yrs ago.

Have you hacked out in company and had a problem? Could be he's insecure. If theres no logical reason you can think of as to why this may be happening then your right to speak to your vet.

To be honest I have no idea if physio does acupunture but I'll find out. If not I'll see about getting someone who does out to have a try.

Will see what vet says when he gets back to me as well.

Well I spoke to my vet about it this afternoon. He said he'll pop into yard tomorrow with some painkillers for him and see if it makes a difference. If it does then he'll take the issue further and do more investigation on it. He said he will also chat to me about everything so we know whats happening etc so we are both working off the same hymn sheet so to speak. Definitely think this horse will break me :-S

the problem still may be there on pain killers - due to remembered pain and/or habit - so if pain killers don't resolve it, it could be that he was in pain and now remembers it so still need further investigation - if that makes sense :o
Sorry to hear your troubles- its infuriating not knowing if its pain or mental :(

Well the vet came out and dropped off painkillers for my boy. He got a big dose yesterday and today and was out walking and cutting it down sat and sun. Vet asked me to ride yesterday and everyday until Monday and he'll be out to discuss everything on Monday.

So far I really do think its pain related as he going much better on the painkillers. He had 1 small pandy and as soon as I asked him to move on he did no questions asked. And then I decided to ask for a small trot as he refused to trot the day before the painkillers. He trotted off best he gone in a long time. He trotted and canter and for first time since he been back in work he got fixed on a xc jump and was set to go over it but I had to pull him out. lol. So will see what next 2 days give out. But if vet agrees its pain related he wants to send him for a bone scan.

Can anyone shed any light on the scan and what happens etc.
