Napping when leading

First problem with my youngster and I'm sure many more to come.
Had him for 2 weeks very much untouched, in the 2 weeks he has been a little gem. Learnt to lead, groomed, pick up feet, stabled.

I'm taking my time with him and not bothered to even try breaking him in till the spring or later.

For the first 10 days we have been learning to lead, all good responses well very well to voice and no issues. He was kept out at night but yard policy now states he has got to be in at night. And here lies the issues he just plants himself coming in from the field about a 500m walk and walks very slowly. I try to gee him up, carry a schooling whip and paise a lot. But when he plants it's only for a few seconds at a time but happens 5ish times down the walk in.

I've tried using the schooling whip with very little success as he just turns his bum away and side steps, not great when he gets very close to the eleccy fence that's runs off the mains.

And now he has started napping when being turned out.

I want to nip it in the bud before it becomes a habit.

Any tips?

my youngest is currently going through this stage too

when she plants if i swing her head to the side and push her shoulder over her starts walking again i think it just get her brain more forward then backwards

for napping back to the field (my youngest is also doing)

i stop her just before she starts. stand her there for a few seconds then start again and i do this every time she tries it on if she decides this isnt going to work either each time she misbehaves leading down to the field i turn her around take her back to the yard and make her stand for a minute and then ask her to walk properly i repeat as many times as needed she soon gets bored with going up and down and walks properly

time consuming but its better to sort it now then later good luck!
