Napping??

How can I stop my pony from napping and spinning round?

Ive only had him two weeks..and he didnt do this when i tried him..

I think he's used to having company..do you think this is why he's napping cus he's on his own and he wants to go back to his feild where he can see other horses..or..is it just naughtyness..

At the moment its safer to ride in the school..but eventually I'd like to hack out.

Hes probably feeling a bit insecure. If hes been moved to a new yard and hes not used to the area he probably wants to get back to the saftey of the herd. It would be worth mentioning it to the previous owner so that if the problem continues and you have to take him back, they will be aware of the situation well in advance. Im sure he will snap out of it. Make sure you ride out with a sensible horse/rider combination and get him used to that then when he feels more confident he should manage it himself. Sometimes horses nap/dont hack out alone as they havent built up trust in their rider. Make sure you spend lots of time doing ground work and showing your pony that you are in charge and that you are a trustworthy leader. Good luck x

Hack out in company for a few times so he knows where he is. When hacking in company, make him stand/ walk away from the other horse every now and again so he's listening to you. As above - do a lot of ground work.

If he's used to hacking in company, then to go out on his own, in a new area is bound to be scary! If you want to hack him on his own, your best bet is for you to be mounted and to have a confident person leading on foot. It will take time, patience and confident riding. Talk to him, encourage him and praise aplenty.
