Took my six and seven year old out on our pony for a hack for the second time today. I leadrein the pony and the other child rides a bike and then they change over. She is a nappy pony, but fine in hand so its a good exercise as the pony stays calm and learns her new surroundings ready for me to take her out alone.
Well we had not got far, we went down the main road and turned off after 200metres down an alleyway which leads us to the small roads through the agricultural land. We started going down the alley when I spy a fire engine, but there is no fire so we continued. When we were almost on top of them the doors opened and out ran one man, followed by another tackling him to the floor. The two firemen proceeded to wrestle each other whilst others jumped out the van trying to drag the man on the floor back to the fire engine. OMG nightmare, don't know if they were playing around or what. They saw me and my pony with my child and carried on, so can only assume they were not playing as they are local men who live on farms and know about horses. The pony was obviously not happy with this situation (it was very bizarre). I had to make the choice to carry on as she had stopped dead wanting to back up and get away, if I had of turned around this would of reinforced her fear and made a napping worse. So I had to try really hard to get her going, told daughter to hold on the various safety straps, not to panic, sit deep and back. Pony jogged past trying to spin, but she calmed down the minute we were passed and daughter sat it out, thank god!!! I was very proud of pony and daugther considering the situation, even I would have felt nervous!!
That has to be the oddest thing I have come across whilst hacking to date!!!
