I clipped my horse today and I accidently nicked him with the clippers, twice! I have never done this before and have clipped loads of times. I felt very bad, and horsey wasn't very happy either though he is a sweety so let me finish the job (being a lot more careful this time!) I was using my some different clippers that I haven't used before, they were Heiniger of some variety. Was I just being really careless or is it easier to accidently cut horses with some clippers than it is with others? I've decided I don't like these clippers!
 
Must admit I have never managed to nick any of mine when clipping. I tend to go at them with wild abandon so think it may be the clippers. What a good boy to let you finish clipping, mine would be hanging off the refters with a look of horror on their faces!!
 
i have clipped with heinigers and have never cut anything.

perhaps the blades were blunt or not tensioned properly which can cause them to snag?
 
Are those the clippers with a swivel head.....Maybe thats the reason you nicked him, as most other clippers have fixed heads...
 
ive got heiniger ones and not nicked my horses whilst clipping with them. ive only ever nicked one horse years ago now, when i owner let the front leg go when i was clipping the armpits
 
They had a fixed head, the head was bigger than normal (I thought) so maybe it was more awkward to hold? The lady who owns the clippers tensioned them for me so they should have been right. Don't think they were blunt as they cut his hair off fine. Poor boy, oh well at least he won't need clipping again until next winter!

nah she flinched a bit but was really good saying it was her first time of being clipped, she was just ticklish and her owner didnt cope too well holding legs up, ended up doing both myself in the end as i didnt want to do it again to her horse
 
Normally Heinegars are as good as gold! although you may find that the blades were very fine, or very worn. Every time a set of blades is sharpened, you remove a layer of the steel. After a time, the teeth become very pointed and can get quite sharp, when the blades are nearing the end of their life. It may be that was the cause of your problem. To see if a set is too sharp, i will normally run the comb (big lower blade) down my arm at about 30 degree angle and see if the teeth, prick my skin or snag. If they do, they are getting worn, I usually then "de point" the tips on some emery(dont try it yourself) so they dont snag or cut..
 
I've now found out that the blades are very fine so cut a lot closer than I am used to, so more likely to nick the horse. Apparently the clipper's owner has cut a few horses with them herself! I will be more carefull if I use them again.
