Noticed yesterday (after I had ridden for half an hour, how guilty do I feel) that Sam had a cut on his off hock. Only about 3cm long but on closer inspection- really deep- could get my finger right in it

still quite fresh so fairly recent.

Anyway, rang vet who came straight away and gave him a shot of painkillers (by now quite puffy round the hock although Sam wasn't lame trotted up), antibiotics and decided it was too awkward a place to stitch so decided to put that blue gel right up inside instead. Advised to leave him turned out.

As predicted by vet this morning it looks MUCH worse. cut looks good- clean and healthy but boy had it swollen up overnight. Gave him his antibiotic injection and re cleaned and treated the wound. Bought some msm to give him as really rate it for injuries etc.

This evening it was even more swollen!!!!

Poor lad is quite lame now. Cold hosed for full 15 minutes and then re cleaned and put more stuff right in it.

His hock has no definition at all this evening, in fact it is convex- vet predicted it would go this way and he is on IM abs so not too worried but did want to ask whether anyone had any other suggestions of things I could be doing to help it???

He's been a star of a patient bless him.

I'd be concerned that he has gone lame when he wasnt at first, couldnt you ring your vet and ask him if its anything to worry about.
My first horse got kicked on the hock on the first day she was turned out, it took ages to go down and I couldnt ride for weeks but I dont remember her being lame.
Fingers crossed hes ok

Vet told me yesterday he fully expected him to be very sore, swollen and lame today so I'm not freaking out about it- just wondering if there is anything more I can be doing to make him more comfortable/help.

My horse came in the field on Sunday night similar. Only a very small tiny cut though and not deep and not sure it was a cut. Just about the hock but bottom of thigh. Next morning, swollen, lame and hot. Vet came and infected. She was only in the field 2 hours. So it became infected in that small space of time. Antibiotic injection. bute injection and the same in powder form for 5 days if we can get her to eat them. Even tried on a butty tonight with honey on!! No chance. Now our vet told us to hibiscrub the scab to make it come off. Then when we had got if off to put this gel on he gave us. Fucidin I think it is called or along those lines. We have to keep the cut open and apply this gel twice a day and not let it scab over. Her leg is leg shaped now and not sausage shaped. Her selling had started to go half way down her leg and nearing her fetlock.

My horse had almost exactly the same at xmas - I ended up having to flush wound out twice a day with iodine solution (on vets advice) with big syringe. I did it religiously and it worked - healed over, I used some Camrosa and there is now a small scar but nothing like the cut she had.

It's a tricky area to keep clean and to stop it moving too much, hope it heals for you soon...
