Nasty livery experience

Thoroughly fed up and pretty dejected by an absolutely horrible livery experience. Without going into the detail too much - served my notice and the attitude of the YO was horrible. They were extremely cold and unsympathetic to the situation - despite the fact that I was interested in returning and I had been incredibly reasonable money wise (so much so that they are doing very well out of it). But thanks to their treatment of me - no way will I return. Is this type of experience par for the course when you've served notice?

Sorry you've had a bad experience. Unfortunately some YO (and horse owners for that matter) are unhinged and will always take it personally if you leave.

There are good YO out there though so don't let it get to you - you're best off out of there! x

Not sure what your experience was but I had to "steal" my own horse back from a livery yard when I gave notice. Luckily I picked a good moment when YO was away but it was incredibly stressful.

Poor you. Went through a very similar experience not so long ago, in fact sounds incredibly similar, where are you located? pm me if you don't want to say on the forum.

Livery has been (in the past) one of the most stressful experiences of my life

- Esp as my horse used to be far from easy.

Some YOs are very strange IMO.

I love the yd I am at now, been there 3 yrs.
You will find much better I am sure. Don't take this experience to heart, if they are like that with you I am sure you are not the only one. They probably have a reputation!

I moved off my yard to my own rented grazing a few weeks ago. Me and YO had a minor falling out about it but I think it was just a knee-jerk reaction from her. I was upset at the time about it because I was moving for very valid reasons and I thought we were friends but I think she finally realised it was not personal and now we are still keeping in touch and getting on fine and I am welcome back at any time

That's nothing.
I kept my horse at one yard, where, the moment you gave notice (literally), they frog marched you and your horse out of the front gates, and left you standing at the roadside with no transport. They would only hand over the tack etc to a third party.
I saw it happen to two other decent liveries (no history of problems at all)....then decided perhaps I wouldn't give much notice

, despite the contract's requirement of a month either way.

I have moved off of two yards..... first one, I wanted to go immediately as I wanted to take the available place at the next.... he only asked for 2 weeks notice to be paid and kept the stable open for 3 months to see if I wanted to go back!!! I did one year later

When I left the second yard it was because merlin needed 24/7 turnout immediately (because of his arthritis) and YM asked for the remainder of the months box rent to be paid which was just under £100 (from what I remember) but she didnt charge me the hay or bedding part of the livery, which was fair

At neither place though did I stay for the notice period..... I kind of up sticks and left the next day....... I dont do hanging around

Have heard some horror stories on here though, which is maybe why I dont hang around..... Luckily I am on DIY so paying for 2 yards didnt break the bank

it really depends on the yard........we have had some really rough leaving moments from people (we are yo)...well publicised on here un fortunatly.....

the last person to leave unfortunatly tried to leave without paying the moeny she owed us...(we were asked to forget about the moeny as she had been with us 3 years appenrlty we owed her that for loytalty.....)

People who left an old yard of ours in the UK sometimes rode/transported their horses off to their new accommodation and only then returned on foot to hand in their notice, because the YO could get into such a strop and took it as a personal insult.

It was just so much easier and more pleasant to do that and to pay in lieu of notice than to endure a month of insults and foul-natured stirring. Makes me smile now, but she was a tyrant, padlocking people's stuff, parking in front of their tack box, etc.

I like to leave (well only done it twice) on the most positive note I can summon up, even if I'm virtually lying through my teeth about my real reasons for moving on, jsut because the horsy world is small and I might, just might, want to return some day.

Its very difficult for both parties, I too am a Yard Owner, I had a livery leave last month and I felt like a great weight had been lifted off my shoulders when I received her notice, she didn't do anything in particular to warrant it, she just didn't fit in and as I only have a small yard of 9 stables I try as hard as I can to 'vet' everyone to make sure my other liveries will like the next person but sometimes it doesn't work. I have turned quite a few away and I always check with the other girls that they are on the yard to meet the next potential livery, I then ask the girls their thoughts on the potential new livery. I think it is very hard as a YO not to take it personally if someone wants to leave, I try my absolute hardest to make my yard perfect for the girls and would definately take it personally but not to the extent that I was rude - I can honestly say if any of my current liveries were to leave now I would be devestated because they are absolutely fantastic to have on the yard. Good luck with your move I am sure your YO treated you in this way because she didn't want you to leave, not a good way to behave though!!

Ditto. My last YO apparently drove one horse off the yard and left it tied up for owner to fetch after she gave notice. Appauling, we left soon after. (literally handed notice in, and bolted) I don't care if that was poor of us - they kept our deposit anyway.

i gave a months notice at the only other yard i have been on - there were tears from the other liveries and 'dont go's' from the YO's even as i was loading up - hugs, kisses - declarations of 'if it doesnt work out your stable will be here - dont even bother telling us just turn up and put your horse back in the stable!'
2 months later if i saw any of them out they turned thier backs on me and have never spoken to me since!

Personally I have never had a good experience at a yard unfortunately...people have always been pretty competive and bitchy as well as noisey and rude...
I left yards years ago and only rent grazing due to past bad experiences...I was stressed, upset and hated going up to the yard at points...in fact I remember mucking out my stables with torches so I didnt bump into other people...!!
Sorry to hear about your rough time...

My YO only heard a rumour about me leaving and threw me off on the spot. I then endured 2 weeks of abusive phone calls and threats, and in the end I moved my horse again as her field was visible from the main road and I was worried about her safety!

I was warned by other ex-liveries not to give notice, just do a runner, but i thought it wouldn't happen to me as I was working full time there too (there was only 2 employees so after I went one 16 year old kid was single handedly running a yard of 25 horses - ridiculous.) But YO didn't care, she was so 'offended' by me considering leaving!!
