Thinking along the lines of the "With a friend like this" post, and the "blame culture" we live in, and you know you shouldn't even accept diesel money if you give someone a lift in your lorry, because then you can be said to be hireing it out..........well.......if you have a sharer for your horse who pays towards the cost, or have a friend who rides and gives you the occasional donation towards shoes, could you be invalidating your horses insurance because technicaly you are "hireing out" your horse ? or am I just getting paranoid !

sadly not an invalid thought....I have a sharer 9 out of 12 months of the year for my oldie, she has her own insurance (part of our agreement) and she is also covered 3rd party on my horse.

She does pay £25 towards feed but as horse is not insured for anything other than 3rd party, I am quite safe.

I never give friends diesel, I steal their keys at the petrol station and fill up on my own card, that way I am clearly taking the decision out of their hands....!

No, you are not being paranoid. About 5 years ago, one of my neighbours had a very bestist friend, they went everywhere together and looked after each others horses at holiday times etc. There was an accident in the dark with a trailer, the friend had had quite alot to drink and the neighbours OH ran over her ankle with the trailer. The friend sued the neighbour successfully and the wonderful friendship ended. The friend explained that is why we have insurance

Someone else said to me "It's not IF they sue, it's WHEN".

IMO, if you cant trust your best friend, who can you trust? All it takes is someone to hurt themselves on/around your horse or property and if they end up in a vegitative state, their family at least will require recompence.

What a sad world that we have to become so synical

When I had a sharer for my horse I rang my insurance company and they said it didn't mind as they saw it that I was loaning my horse rather than hiring him out which would invalidate it.

My horse is fully insured for anyone to ride. I have a sharer for him.

If something happened how could they prove that the person was contributing to his keep? And in what sort of situation do you think this would be questioned?

Like if I gave a friend a lift to a show, which I have done a few times, how can they prove she gave me a tenner towards the fuel?

I think the law is in place to stop people doing this on a regular basis to earn money, without taking out the relevant insurance, rather than to stop you giving a mate a lift in return for them paying fuel costs. Or like someone owning say 10 horses and charging people say a tenner a ride and earning a living from it, rather than a small contribution towards the horses keep.

Maybe I am totally wrong, but on such a small scale I would not think this would be questioned. Perhaps I am wrong though as I have never had to deal with such thing.
