Native pony search

My friend asked me to help her find a nice project native pony for her to buy 13.2h or bigger, between 4-7yrs old she isnt fussed about gender or if its green, just as long as its been initally backed. I think she was hoping to spend £1200 or under but would spend more if tack and rugs were incuded. She aims I think to show it in mountain and moorland classes and whp.

There doesn't seem to be anything out there for sale however other than tbs or welsh sec C/D's of which she isn't that keen on (personally I love them). I think she's more after a highland or new forest pony. Is anyone else having this problem?

Anyone know of any? / fancy helping me search web ads? :)
 
oh & should probably mention she's based in the north east, but I think she's willign to travel within reason.
 
If shes wanting to show M&M it would need to be registered and even a green one thats 4-7 and backed registered Highland would be a lot more than that I think, demand has remained high, maybe even risen in the recession as they are seen as an all round pony who can carry all the family members. Much more likely to find a New Forest as they arent so suitable for adults size/weight wise.

Sorry but plenty of adults ride New Forests in all disciplines without any problems! (Me for one) They are smashing all round ponies for both children and adults and can turn their hooves to anything. :D

I'd agree with Lachlanandmarcus - budget is not going to get any of the large breeds, except possibly a NF if wanting to compete - and they will DO anything!
Most heavy breeds (Highland, Fell & Dales) will command in excess of £2k if registered and also ridden - and falling also within your friends age range, some will be quite a lot more ££'s. A good welsh D or Connie will also be well out of her price range too.
Can she stretch any further?

Has she thought of possible loan?
 
I think she would increase her budget abit.

But as to loan, she's had one for just over a year and backed him but now that he's riding away nicely the owners are wanting him back for their son, which I know she's really upset about, so I'm pretty sure she'd determined to buy her own.
 
She might be able to get a project new forest for that price BUT they will tend to be in the new forest area NFED is a good website with lots of foresters advertised.

If she is looking for something to show then a proven show quality pony will be more expensive unless it has some behavioural issues. I paid £3150 for my new forest when he just turned 5 he is about 13.2 and capable of carrying an adult. However he had been highly placed at the breed show as a youngster in hand. If I had to replace him now nearly 5 years later I think I would struggle with the same budget.

Highlands are much sort after, show quality ones especially. She won't get one of those with that budget for sure.

I suggest she perhaps makes an advert saying what she wants and what her budget is and put the advert on sites which specialise in native ponies such as hamlets house. Horse gossip also has a native pony wanted section too.

Absolutely (Im a pony rider myself!), I probably worded it badly; was just thinking of more the men of the family height/weight wise. A 6 foot 2 bloke weighing 15 stone might be a bit much for a 13 hand forester but would be fine on a full up Highland.

I'm looking for pretty much the same thing, but with a slightly higher budget. There is absolutely nothing out there, and every time I've found something that sounds suitable, it all seems to fall through before viewing. Very disheartening :(
 
She should be able to pick a Section D up within budget no problem, she just needs to be prepared to travel to Wales to find one, weve loads of the things round here. In fact if she could come up with the local horse sales is on she could have her pick & she should walk away with change in her pocket.
Cant see her getting a highland or anything like that though for that sort of money though.
 
A shame shes not after a section C, My YO has one who ticks all your boxes. He does very well at showing too. His a lovely boy. PM if you think your friend might change her mind!

Also search fell ponies on preloved - there are a lot of not so good ones but there are some registered ones that need work and might scrub up quite well!

It depends on what quality she's wanting - definate HOYS quality you'll have to pay more but I bought my lad (pretty much unbroken but bitted and sat on) aged 4.5 years for 1400 about 2 years ago and he's not neccessarily HOYS quality but he's good enough quality for us to go affiliated when we can go a bit better! (he came with a bridle and £10 "lucky money!")

Toby is uber-amazing and makes me think why the hell did I jump up to 17.2's and 16.3's when the best fun I can have is pony-squishing??

Yes of course, I know those competing top-end won't be getting far on shetlands...!

It is a matter of personal preference....

New Forests are awesome beasts.

Has she thought about an exmoor? They are a bit smaller (mine is for sale and will make 12.2hh+) but take up a huge amount of leg! I am 9 stone and 5ft6 and dont look too big on her!
She is so forward going and has placed in top 3 everytime out last year in hand. She was 4 this year and is now backed and walk, trot, canter under saddle and hack. She is also very very easy to look after needing no rugs and feet trim very rarely (3 times a year). I'm asking in the region of £1200.

Pm'd you I have a welsh section d bay four whites and white blaze if she can do a quick sale and doesn't mind doing work with her on the road she fits her budget I'm in north west.
 
And there was me thinking my 13.2 5 yo old backed and riding away reg Newfie was worth about £500 ;)

You are too far from me and although OH wants me to sell him I am rather enjoying this riding away bit far too much :D I am now a converted pony sqwisher lol!

Your lovely pony is worth way more than £500, the market will be limited as most people want something further on but I would expect to sell for nearer £2000 if he is as nice as he seems, they are hard to find when you are looking.
 
I stand corrected :D I'll call him a forrester :D

SShhhh don't tell hubby he has a value I keep telling him ponies are sold for meat money as no-one wants one - especially one thats going to end up grey - the most awful of awful undesirable mucky colour ;)
 
I think you would be very disappointed if you bought a New Forest thinking it was going to be a mini TB, they are nothing like TB's, which is exactly when I love mine.

Far too intelligent to be a mini tb - he asks questions the tb's I have had have been far more compliant ;)

( not saying TB's are thick but horses and ponies have very different outlooks on life :D )
