Hi all, just a question regarding Regumate...

My mare is still coming into season at this time of year, she doesn't become stroppy/mareish but very dopey instead! Riding her is a problem because she is constantly stopping to "pee"... She won't move when I try to bring her in from the field because she's standing there with her legs apart all the time, lol.

One of her previous owners actually contacted me on here (:D) and mentioned that Regumate solved the issue. However, this seems to be quite expensive for what is mainly an inconvenience, can anyone recommend a natural alternative or supplement that will help?

I've heard about Agnus Castus, anyone have experience with this? Thanks in advance! :)

Agnus castus (chaste berry) is very good, and I believe is also used in human supplements for this type of thing. The biggest tip I can give you for using herbal supplements is look at the ingredients, if they aren't listed I avoid it altogether, it isn't against the law but it often means the active ingredients are few and far between. Or you could phone the company and ask for ingredients and more importantly, concentrations. It's often fed in liquid form, and should be in a strong alcohol, and should be a dark brown colour (the darker, the more concentrated generally)

You could even make your own if you can get some chaste berry, would be cheaper still :D

That said, I have used regumate in the past and (tut tut Jess) if you can get the Porcine version it's a lot cheaper and really does work. :D

You could also try a marble in her uterus. This needs to be inserted by your vet and providing it stays put it's supposed to stop them coming into season. I'm told that it doesn't always work with every mare, but it may well be worth trying. Also, if it does work it's only a one-off cost!

I'd also give marbling a go, accepting it doesn't work for every girlie. No expensive potions to buy & no side effects. You never know, it may just do the trick. Would look into getting a vet with an interest in equine reproduction to do the job as they are going to have more experience.
