NBS or Natural wear pattern shoes are basically an advanced pair of rolled and safed off shoes,
The fuller of the shoe is effectivly tapped over and closed (althought factory made shoes usually have the fuller still present) by adding a roll, the break over point is reduced and the effort require to break over is also reduced.
Usually unclipped these shoes allow the hoof to be take back more than usually and this is handy on flat footed horses as it allows the hoof to be bought back and allws the hoof axis to be restored to a norm.
As it reduced the break over point it also helps with horses which are prone to stumbling and this is a big help as it really is effective with stumbling. this could also be atributed to the factthat the foot is taken back more with less toe.
Thanks for you advice. We have just changed farrier for my eventer as we have had six weeks of nightmare. The new farrier feels that he is a candidate for natural balance shoes and I was just wondering what your views where. Our old farrier told us awful stories about them and although we have lost trust in him now those doubts are still there.
My farrier switched my last horse to them as he was quite "down at the heel" and they worked wonders. The key is to get them fitted by someone who is trained in shoeing with NB shoes.......there are some farriers who fit them without being trained and they end up being of no benefit or detrimental.......done correctly, most farriers speak positvely about them but they need to be done by someone who is trained and knows what they're doing. Good luck
have one tb with very crap feet she has had nb shoes for a number of years (6/7) and a farrier tried her in 'normal' shoes a few years ago and she went lame again (had prvious issues!) so now bk to nb. but they dont suit every horse and the farrier needs to know what they are doing!
Put on by a farrier who understands the reasons why they are needed and how to apply them properly, they are fabulous, I can't praise them highly enough.
my 30 year old new forest has been in natural balance shoes with extra gel pads ,wedges and something that i call hoof putty for the last 20 weeks following an evil episode of cushing's related laminitis.I doubt he would have come right without them and his remedial farrier from Liphook hospital recommends them for all horses, though without all the additions which are helping to keep his pedal bone stable within the hoofcapsule(i've seen the x-rays and it was frightening close to the sole)Hope that helps?
They appeared to have become a bit fashionable a few years ago and a farrier put my friends horse in them, (He has got bad feet anyway!!) and his feet just didn't look a good shape and he was always losing them, also the same farrier put the driving ponies on the yard in them too and their feet again just didn't look good in them! Apparently he used to use NB on everything he shod.....
She wasn't happy with the way they looked so she tried to discuss changing back to other shoes but he wasn't interested,... so my friend found a different farrier he changed him back into traditional shoes but with rolled toes, and his feet were a lot better and he kept the shoes on a lot longer.....
My own experience was when I got my current horse 3 years ago who also has bad feet my old farrier put NB on him and he lost them quite a few times and again foot shape not good but I changed farrier and he kept him in NB but he really improved the shape of the foot and because they are a wider shoe, it gives a larger area for the concussion to be spread over so for a horse with thin walls and rubbish horn they are good.
But when I moved up to Yorkshire it seems none of the farriers I have used up here use them so he was back in traditional shoes, but just got a new farrier now who doesn't use NB but is all for the idea of them and has chosen to reshoe my chap in double toe clips and hacked a lot of toe off and TBH they look really good and very similar to the way they did in NB. He's only had them on 2 weeks so far but fingers crossed its going well was turning himself inside out in the field the other day and they're still on!!
My mare is on natural balance and has been for years.
She had foot problems and vet advised them.Never had a problem with them and farrier is very good.
My old Cushings horse had a similar technique as her boy, using natural balance type shoes and hoof putty etc due to, as MadDog says 'an evil episode of cushing's related laminitis'
That was 2 and a half years ago .... as soon as he could the Farrier got him back into NB shoes and that's with 10 degrees of Pedal Bone rotation .... they are brilliant .... and this is thanks to a Farrier who is properly qualified to fit them
