Is commonsense, understanding and knowledge. Nothing more, nothing less.

It was there long before it got branded 'NH' or whichever other name.

*steps down from pedestal*

Rant over.

Edited - Typo in title. 'Intelligent* Can't change the damn thing.

I agree. I have learned some useful things from Kelly Marks books, but any decent horse behaviour book will give you useful information. The most useful stuff I have learned is from actually working with my horse - he is a good teacher!

Of course it is! I learnt all of my horsemanship skills from old Spanish men, go on laugh LOL, but it is true. I am firm, oh yes I am very firm, but very fair, and it means I have delightful horses to handle.

Ditto.

Sorry. I got fed up of messages of 'you have a closed mind' blah blah blah. When no, I have no desire to go out and buy gadgets or play round with games or ropes or whatever else it says 'in the manual' seriously. I just want to ride my horses [including one we got who was seriously f'ed up from incorrect NH methods may I add], who are all now nicely schooled, well mannered and all extremely happy in life with nothing major traumatic ever happening to them nor 'beating them' into submission. Honestly. Just because you don't brand yourself a 'NH Pracitioner' doesn't mean you're rough handed or closed minded to training.
You do what you do to get the result from learning through years of experience in a variety of situations, and change each training method to suit each horse as needed. It's called horsemanship! No rocket science or gods gift secret to it.

I'm not on about him or having a personal attack though.

I'm on about it all as a whole in general.

The whole NH v Traditionalist argument bores me. It's like being a pink fluffy bunny or satan itself, when in fact, the core foundations are the bloody same!

Do what you like with your horses, they're there as an item of fun and pleasure for us, but please don't make out that I [or any other non branded NH person] doesn't know what we're talking about just because we're not a full taken in convert to a sudden 'right' way of managing our horses to a whole new lifestyle.

Most people use 'Intelligent horsemanship' as general core bases [body language, common sense, knowing what to do/where to be/when to at the right time etc] and don't deny this...as I said, it is just common knowledge and experience! And learning new things everyday. Again = Horsemanship! It then doesn't mean you have to go the full hog to verify using parts of it - ie, strip them straight down to barefoot, turnout 24/7, ride treeless, not bit, no tack, no hard feed, no travelling, etc.

But anywho.

*sigh*

I feel you pain Binky....I feel the same way too!

Many people assume you don't know what you are doing with your horses if you don't follow some 'code'....

Bores the hell outta me....

Why are people obsessed with something they don't like, agree with or want to do? Why so many threads with the same posters making the same comments? It's like a broken record, why not live and let live?

Speaking from the opposite side of the fence from you Binky, that is exactly what I would say. No good nh horseman tries to claim anything else. Why the vs at all? Many combine what they learn from conventional and less conventional trainers with great sucess.

*Chants* Binky! Binky! Binky!

Massive massive thumbs up!!! Couldn't agree more, but am just a bit too dense and over-emotional to word it correctly!!!

And a big tubs of chocs :p

T xx

PS, I will risk adding that I looked into Parelli for a while, amongst other 'NH' methods. Having been as thorough as I can and comparing everything, I can safely say that the stuff I have been doing for years could be labelled as what is now known as NH. I dunno, I just do it my way :D

QP, always makes me laugh that statement. Isn't it funny how 'common sense' actually isn't that common though.

That goes for those who choose to follow a NH type approach AND those blessed with an apparent abundance of common sense who follow a more 'traditional' approach.

Devils advocate, interesting eh?
