The potential phalene puppy we might be getting is fed on Natural Instinct food and I am considering carrying this on as whilst I like the idea of raw I don't know anything about creating a balanced diet and it doesn't work out too expensive as she is so small and eats small amounts. Has anyone fed NI? What should I be feeding a puppy, the puppy formula? Is it good quality? Should I be worried about salmonella (silly I know but you can't be too cautious)? Thanks, you can tell I am new to this!

I used to feed it but it was winding up expensive and so once I found my feet with the diet I just started buying raw from a bloke in a shed :p and decanting it into the NI boxes. Should be fine for a small dog.

Remember as Karyn K on here used to say, 'balance' for a dog is not the same as balance for a human, you don't have to feed everything in the same meal, the same day or indeed the same week. 'Balance' in the dog food world is pretty much an advertising construct. Look at the back of a dry food packet - there isn't much actual 'balance' for a dog in there and the raw diet offers tonnes more variety than the same bag of cereals and ash year in, year out. JMO!

I found NI very good quality and I handle raw chicken and tripe and all sorts of mingy stuff every day and no one I know has keeled over and died from coming into contact with me yet :p

NI gets 4 stars from me! Its so easy to feed, great quality and nutritionally provides everything your dog needs. I feed mainly the duck as its got the highest calories but I've tried the lot, tripe and chicken, turkey, puppy....as I can't get 2 of my 3 to eat them! (otherwise 5 stars!) But they are really fussy and I don't think like the texture of minces.

Natural instinct is soo expensive, I could never afford to feed raw on their food. I feed a Rottweiler and a collie on Manifold Valley Meats. Good quality raw products and great price.

I feed my puppy on NI. He's 6 months old now and thriving. Must admit I couldn't afford to feed both dogs on it (also have a 9.5 year old Rottie) and it would be very pricey to feed both. So I stick with it for the pup as like you I'm nervous about balancing his diet correctly and feel like NI takes the complexity out of it for me. Older dog I don't worry as much as I have had him years so know what he is like when healthy and feel like I can judge how he is doing more easily! He has DAF food - variety of minces and RMBs.
