Hi all, I'm in the process of taking on a pony from our local rescue centre. She's an adorable little nf x welsh with a lovely temperament.in her last foster home they had a lot of rape on the farm &'she started to head shake, cough & wheez, they assumed she had an allergy to the rape..Now I've been told that in the last 18months since being bk at the sanctuary she has been fine, has ventapulmin every now & then when required. I was wondering if anyone has any natural remedies they use with their horses for this?

I've become quite a believer in natural remedies since a vet recommended me green clay & coconut oil for my horse who is extremely girthy, & showed signed of ulcers.. The change in him is amazing! Thanks in advance.

Sorry, haven't got any allergy info to help but could u expand a bit on the green clay/coconut oil remedy pls? Mine is girthy too but no other ulcer-like signs, so am interested in this as not heard of it before:) thanks

Yard I worked on had one with a rapeseed allergy, best solution we had was a nosenet & avoiding it as much as possible.

Yes of course.. My horse was said to be 'cold backed' when I first got him 3 years ago but it soon become apparent that he was just girthy.. If I was to do his girth straight up like 3 holes he would panic to the point of running backwards & even laying down, It was like he would panic so much that his legs would go. I took him to a vet & osteo in Newmarket that had been treating my mums horse for stifle issues..she did his back check etc & said that he was quite tender in the girth area & asked if he was girthy... I also mentioned that he was quite stressy, doesn't always settle in the field & that he hangs his willy out when he's girthed. She said to give him green clay powder, a small like supplement scoop in dinner & breakfast, for two weeks with a tablespoon of coconut oil for 3 months, then two weeks off the clay, then back on for another 2 weeks ... She also said that my horse may change & become more confident..which he has, is now top in the pecking order in the field, is no longer girthy, has settled down with his schooling, doesn't hang his willy out lol (which apparently can be a pain reaction & not just relaxation lol..& is just much happier. The clay apparently works as a buffer against the stomach acid which then allows the stomach to heal.

Hi Gingerbear, just seen your post, my horse has allergies and I would recommend you try a company called Equinatural, they supply herbs and are very helpful. They have a huge range for all sorts of problems.

I've tried many natural remedies for head shaking and pollen allergy (particularly rape) and unfortunately none made any difference.

I tried aniseed, marsh mallow leaf, comfrey and one other that i can't remember off the top of my head!

If it is the local rapeseed that is causing the allergy you could try locally made honey if you can get hold of any. Give a small amount daily (not sure how much perhaps a spoonful) in feed it has been known to help some horses. You could google for more info tho.

Will do, thanks for the advise.. I'm now just a bit worried as to what I'm taking on.. I'd been told since working with this pony that she hasn't been on any meds since being away from rape seed but then yesterday they said she's on ventapulmin but only because that's what medication they already have at the sanctuary for the other horses with copd so the give her some.

Hey... I give my boy local honey and I put vaseline around his nose. Seems to work a treat. He does have an inhaler - which he now only has if it is a particular high pollen count or if he suffering a little. Just gives him instant relief (just into lungs rather than the ventapulmin which gets into whole body!

Good luck - I was so overwhelmed when he was diagnosed thinking it was only him etc, but there is help and treatments and when managed they are still fab horses. My boy is still in full work and loving life :-)
