On Friday morning, my two choc lab bitches did a bunk. They had a 2 minute lead on me but despite my best efforts they had vanished! I had two big problems 1.our road is a very busy commuter run,and 2. the shoot drive the fields at the back of our house on Fridays. So faced with the possibility of flat or shot dogs I rang Dog warden and drove around giving my card to all and sundry! Any ways after a 3hr search dog warden rings he has found them in some blokes garden a couple of houses away.
So today gets a knock on the door, its the man who's garden they were in, he tells me that they have killed his rabbit which was out in the garden, and he is going to ring the police because they are Dangerous Dogs!!!
Now I understand that the rabbit was his pet etc, but is he going a little OTT. I dont know what to do re: replacing his rabbit either? All advice gratefully recieved

Possibly this is a steep learning curve for you as all dogs should be under control at all times, there shouldn’t be a single moment where you are not aware of where you’re dogs are. I agree that you’re neighbour is going a bit OTT with the dangerous dog bit however he might well have loved his rabbits as much as you obviously love you’re dogs, so you should ask yourself the question, how would you react if god forbid a neighbours dog entered you’re garden and savaged you’re dogs.
I am sorry if this post is a bit blunt but I have been a professional dog trainer/handler for many years and know of too many dogs that have eventually been re homed or destroyed through no fault of their own.
 
tell your neighbour that your very sorry for the upset your dogs have caused .....and offer to buy him some dumpling mix for his stew.........if your dog had killed my rabit i wouldnt have left it 2 days to come and tell you about it .....i think said neighbour might be trying it on for some compo?????
 
Agree with above..think neighbour is trying it on.... rabbit may well have died, but are your dogs to blame? pity he hasn't got the body to prove it.... if they did, it will have been mauled... truth of the matter is it probably died of fright at having two strange dogs suddenly in beside it... Rabbits are suspectible to stress...

Personally I wouldn't offer to replace it, as nothing can replace any loved pet that has died, whatever the circumstances.

Not going to harp on about dogs being in control at all times, you know that yourself and accidents do happen from time to time.

Think maybe an offer of condolences and an apology of your dogs getting loose.......
 
To add.. I do think that while you can say neighbour is trying it on, I did take to heart what somone else said about if it had been your dog.

We have chickens, and are much more wary about strange dogs now, had one we were keeping for our cousin maul (so we had to kill) a chicken and it is awful to see. At the end of the day they were your dogs, and whilst perhaps an accident, another life has been lost, a much loved life it would seem and some heartfelt sympathy would probably be appreciated!
 
I wouldn't worry about him reporting your dogs to the police are likely to do nothing (my horse was attacked & mauled by a German Shepard while I hacked on public bridleway, when I reported it to the police, I was told that as it was an animal on animal attack, they could do nothing!!!). Just take it as a warning and move on.
