I have had my horse in training for the past 3 months to event and he's been fabulous. I always hack him out in an outline as I have always thought, there needs to be schooling disipline 24/7 not just in the school. He has been hacking out perfectly until I went on holiday for a week- he was ridden twice but no proper work and in no sort of an outline, just on the buckle. He's naturally a very spooky horse and is scared of his own shadow! Drains, grit bins, leaves.. you name it he'll spook at it. I had managed to de-spook him to everything but since i've been away- he's become all spooky again.
He spooked at some temporary roadsigns up a hill near home on sunday and literally ran backwards all the way down the hill, the more leg I put on the faster he'll go back and then starts to rear. So I got off and walked him up the hill, now normally I will refuse to give in but i'm worried he'll hurt himself if he explodes on the road. After walking all the way up this huge 'scary' hill I nipped into a friends and borrowed her spurs which worked to a certain extent and am buying some this week as needed them to compete with anyway but does anyone have an suggestions as I feel i'm gonna hit the deck soon. I just can't understand where this fear has suddenly come from?! He normally hacks out perfectly but he's decided to rebel somewhat
Any advice?

Well, welcome to my world - the EXACT same thing has happened to my boy - got him in Nov have been working hard on schooling and gettign him out and about etc etc - he always was a bit skitterish and we joke that 'Paddy is having another paddy' and because I don't have a school I always have tried to continue the work out on hacks, outline etc. Went on hols, my lovely pal rode him out a few times for me and then when I came back and rode him on the bit out on hacks he was having flakies! All I would say is that was last week, I hacked him down to my instructors a few more times than normal and had a few discussions in teh school and now he is back to normal - well as normal as Paddy is!
