In my lesson today I was riding a lovely horse who everyone adores. I get the impression that he's the type who will look after you if you are nervous or novice but give you a more challenging/fun ride if you know what you're doing. I'm about halfway between these two states!

He's a big strong hunter type (about 16'3-17' with a decent amount of bone and power).

Today he was being very cheeky and ignoring my canter transition but as soon as my instructor was watching he would do it perfectly - despite me asking in the exact same way each time.

It was very frustrating and made my legs tense up and curl up instead of being long and low. How would you get a horse like this to listen to you?

It made me quite cross although I always worry its be so don't like to tap or growl, but this time I am SURE I was being ignored!

What would you do?

A lot of school horses are used to doing things as the instructer looks to them as they know this is the time to canter/trot to back of the ride i.e their turn, this could be the problem you were experiancing
