Hi there!
I have just turned my mare away due to KS and arthritis so she is finding stabled life makes her get very stiff. I was worried about how she would cope, as she’s warmblood, but currently she is loving it! So much that she is a complete nutcase to turn back out now once brought in for a pamper! I’ve never had problems dealing with her.
I’ve brought her in a few times And she’s perfectly relaxed on yard and coming in and but as soon as I turned her out, I really struggle to hold her. I turned her out in a bridle today and felt like I was going to lose her! She just gets so excitied! She’s not a foodie either so doesn’t matter what treats u have! It’s not ideal when the field is a 15-20 min walk away from the main yard!

any ideas would be grately helpful!

ps: said mare is defiantly a typical princess mare!

Oh dear not ideal, at least she is feeling good in herself. Best advice I gcoukd give would be..

Lunge rope or long line.
Gloves.
Bridle or chiffney if she is going up.

And wear a hat? Life is too precious!

My boy is great in summer turning in and out. He hates the field in winter so is a nightmare to bring in. I had the help of Guido ( the chap that does liberty at olympia etc) and he showed me how to lead. So far so good but will see how it goes in winter!

Agree totally with hat, gloves, bridle and long leadrope, so you can have some space if she is being silly. Also agree that perhaps she doesn't need to come in totally right now ? Perhaps start with baby steps - catch, take out of field, do mini-pampering ( feet, quick brush etc ) then let her go again, without trying to do the whole thing all at once ? Once she is calmer with leaving the field, and then returning, could you build up the distance you leave the field with her, and eventually end up at the yard ?

Be careful and keep yourself safe

Thank you for your replies! She gets brought out of the field and given a little groom and pamper everyday. She has to come down to the yard to have her feet done. I’ve tried bringing her further away from the field and doing a pamper, this is also fine, I’ve been moving it further towards the yard each time. I think it’s going to be all the gear and hold on for dear life till she gets the idea that she always goes back? thank you again xx

Horses rarely consider grooming and feet pickout 'pampering', it certainly sounds as if your would prefer not to bother. And tbh, I can't see the benefit of grooming a horse which is living out. I would certainly want to catch her and check her over, giver her a food reward for standing still and let her go again

Thank you but she does love a groom, and she gets a little feed daily.? she always comes over when I call her so it’s not the daily stuff I’m having problems with, it’s just the turning her back out after having to come in for a little while? x

as the OP has said she will need to come in and out for footcare etc so it's not something that I think she should just ignore.
I think a bridle with gloves etc is the best move. Can you get someone else to go with you and maybe try leading one on each side a couple of times?

what was she like before you turned her away? was she generally quite well mannered? if so it may just be a case of her adjusting to her new life and learning the new routine in which case you just need to manage it for hopefully a short period. I find with my retirees the less i do with them, the more feral they become, so I would try and keep going with yours!

Then as someone else said it is probably that she has stiffened up while she has been in. Does she come in to a bed, or a bare floor? Is she on any kind of anti-inflammatory?

She was always pretty well mannered. I think it must be her just adjusting to new life, which clearly she is loving? If I did leave her she would go feral. She’s due a vet check in a week or so anyway to see how she’s doing after her last set of injections. xx
