Well my mare that I have owned for 2.5years had her worse napping episode at a XC clinic yesterday. We were vertical rearing and running to the left. The jumps (once we got to them were not a problem).

Is anyone elses mare like this at the start of the season? She seems to be the same every year. Also do you think sheepskin cheek pieces will have keep her concentration on the fences and are they BSJA and BE legal?

Sheepskin cheekpieces are BSJA and BE legal as far as I know, and I suppose you could try them, but it sounds like you might have a bigger problem you need to work through with her. Does she normally do this or is it unusual behaviour for her? If it's any consolation my mare was an absolute cow XC schooling with other horses, napping and b***ering off, but was fine on her own and great when at a competition and with her mind on the job.

I had been looking to sell my mare so that I could buy a 14.2 that my daughter and I could share, advertised and found some great potentilal purchasers. They wanted her vetting and I confidently agreed but could not be there to ride her for the vet. She was dreadful for the YM I had drafted in to ride her: crabbing, refusing to go forwards and threatening to buck, so bad the vet thought she had either a sore back or very bad feet, not the horse I had ridden a few days before. Not surprisingly, she failed the vetting. I was really concerned ther was something badly wrong, I dashed to the yard and tentatively rode her to find a very forward going lively mare, just coming into season!!! Her first few seasons in the spring are always the worst, the rest of the year you can hardly tell when she is in season, perhaps that's the problem with your mare? I'm sure she'll settle.

sounds a bit like my mare used to be, She isnt now and only with help off the ground. She would go vertical even if i asked her to go through a puddle she was so bad. Now shes an angel but has the odd hiccup if one of her friends call her whilst shes doing something but she still has to do whats asked even if it takes all day. Sounds like you might have some issues to deal with. Did you ask something different of her or lead her away from the group?

She has done 2 XC clinics before with a bit of napping but not this bad. We must have done throughout the day about 30 + vertical rears. She did seem to improve after telling off etc. She didn't have an issue with the fences and when forward and jumping was lovely. If the horses were beside/ in front of the fence she wanted to go to them.

She is not normally a nappy horse and hacks alone/ company etc. Which is what makes me think it's her starting her season. She is not a showy mare when she's actually in season but i think she may be feeling a bit tender? She just wasn't quite herself all day. Stressing on yard, nightmare to lead around whilst I got ready

could be or a pain issue maybe??

My mare is still a pain in season I have to admit. Was it asking to do something she didnt want to or standing still or being left behind. As what ever set her off is the issue, mine used to be water. Or everyone going off and leaving her. Now I make a point of doing these things as much as poss!!

Tbh I dont go to clinics though so I cant say whether this helps or hinders, We do everything on our own now so she doesnt get the chance to nap. What breed is she??

My mare did exactly the same at an XC clinic with Bill Levitt, each time she did a vertical rear or just as her feet where about to lift off again, he told me to turn her in a tight circle so she can't lift off properly.
It really worked and although she still has the odd nappy moment we have never reared like that again, suffice to say i won't be doing group clinics with her for a while but i'm glad that all four feet are now firmly on the ground.
She now realises I have a trick that prevents her rearing so doesn't do it anymore.

She's recently had her back done and no real niggles there, saddle was checked 4 weeks ago. She was the last to jump at all the fences and stood still fine. It def was not the jumps as she was napping before we even were aiming for a fence. She simply wanted to return to the group pf horses. Stupid thing is she was quite happy to be left the last horse to go.

My mare is very clever and she rears and spins if you ask her to circle. Her rearing did improve with tapping between the ears. The napping also improved as the day went on, we were happpily jumping everything and the last (water complex) she was a total star.

We just tried to make her have to work away from the others so that I could deal with the issue whilst I had someone on the ground shouting and although I think the spectators etc thought it looked awful and all said they wouldn't have ridden stayed on I never once felt she was getting me off. It was sheer frustration esp after receiving a lovely black eye

I would get her teeth and back seen to if you havent already due to pain this could be one reason for doing this .

I will get her teeth looked at, she generally requires sedation. Anyone recommend a good equine dentist Surrey/Sussex? Pref one that can work on horses that tend to need sedation but always seem to manage without. OTherwise I will just get my vet out again - I know, I know not good but he does get regularly trained

Iwould know about dentist down yourway as i dont live that way but may be worth looking on the internet or if anyone on this site knows .
