Went on a pleasure ride today, well it was supposed to be a pleasure ride but I didn't find anything pleasurable about Axel

He was really naughty and kept doing these absolutely massive bucks for no reason at all and when I least expected them.
If he wasn't bucking he was going sideways and humping his back and trying to yank the reins out of my hands so he could get his head down. He felt like a coiled spring for the whole 10 miles. He totally lost the plot in the woods and naorrowly missed scraping me off under a tree, luckily I leant over but still scraped my arm along a big branch.
I managed to stay on though which I'm rather pleased about!

One good thing about the day was the good company I had, my friend from the yard Adele came on Hannahs horse Ebony, and a very nice lady called Charlotte came on Hannahs mums horse Murphy. About halfway round Charlotte asked if I went on HHO so I said yes, she then said 'are you Seahorse?' it turns out she's lotty73 from on here!
She was very generous and kindly let me take Murph around the xc course at the end, bravely holding mad Axel for me

Next time we go on one I'm going to give Axey a calmer and lunge him before we go!

Hmmm, I have the same sort of problem with my mare at times - it's VERY frustrating. Certainly recommend the lunging. Also, try doing something like a open day at a XC course - so you get the open fields & other riders, but less of an atmosphere & you have the chance to 'school' him through it...

That's a good idea

I think they hire the xc course that we were jumping today, would be great to go over there with just a few horses.
I was a bit worried because he's never ever done anything like that before, and it was so out of character, I didn't know what to do tbh. Thankfully he settled down but I didn't dare take him round the xc course so I got off and held him while Adele and Charlotte went round on their 2. He wasn't impressed about that!
I had a nice jump round on Murphy tho

Ahhh, glad you 'got a go'!

There's a few XC courses in Kent but I guess there's a few closer to you as well...

Hiya, was that the Normanhurst estate ride? I was sooo nearly going there today but after jumping new girlie on grass for first time last night (I had similar problems with broncing etc etc!) I decided against it as I had no-one to ride with and didn't fancy being alone with a frothing mad bouncing ginger mare!

If it was the Normanhurst ride, they hire out the xc all year round and it's only a tenner per horse for as long as you like! Let me know if you decide to go and I'll meet you there, we can be mad together, LOL

Thanks for the mention! I'm still smiling after the fab day i had and i was only too pleased to lend you murphy so that you could have fun over the cross country fences! And as i kept saying at the time- well sat!!! Really good to meet you, hope to see you and Rachel soon!

Chex is the same, I don't even bother taking him to things like that anymore because its not remotely enjoyable! Although he's 25 and should know better

. I find myself constantly apologising to other for backing into them etc

It was in Catsfield, Wilton House I think it was called. It was lovely and we got to ride over lovely parkland which is normally private. Very nice xc course all in a field with lots of variety.
Where are you then? We could meet up one day if you like. Axel has hardley ever jumped so I might need to get some practise in before I go xc schooling lol!!

Hi hon, sorry to hear axey was a pickle. Maybe the inhand show would have been the better option!!
I saw you asking about calmers. A friend at the yard uses a global herbs one special formed for TB types (ie not a native) and absolutly swear by it. Hailsham feeds stock it and its a reasonable price too!!
