Went to the yard last night, my old gelding was obviously NOT himself! He wasn't grazing.... I know something is wrong when he's not trying to stuff his face. Just picking at the grass for a moment, then standing, looking really uncomfortable, shifting weight from one hind to the other.
Oh no, I thought I was in for late night checks, out-of-hours vets, colic, nightmare scenario. (Especially as we don't have the stables built there yet)
I checked him over, no gut sounds, no sweating, breathing normal, not tucked-up, and he was just standing, not pacing or rolling. Strange.
I called the YO, in case she'd noticed something during the day. She was just about to call me - said pony had apparently decided that the grass was greener on the other side of the fence - literally - and had taken himself over one of the cross-country jumps we have built into the fencing.
and had a good go at eating all of the rested field.
He must have been there all night, until she arrived in the morning, and even then he didn't want to be caught, naughty little guy!! So he was just tired and stuffed! Such a relief! Don't they make you panic sometimes though...
