Navicular bone cysts in all four feet

Has anyone heard of a horse having navcular bone cysts in all four feet. If so what is the likely outcome for somethinglike this and is there a likely cause. At the moment my horse has been re shod with graduated heel shoes on all four, and is now on box rest for a month with bute daily. Can she come sound after this. My farrier has not heard of this in the hindfeet and is keen to see the report once we have it from the vets.

Not heard of it before but it doesn't sound good. Bone infections are notoriously difficult - if not impossible - to clear up. I would have thought that an added problem with bone infections deep in the hoof capsule is that attempts to cure it would be as damaging and catastrophic as the infection itself. I would have thought that pain control when the cysts are present in all 4 feet would have further added to the problems. I could easily see secondary problems such as laminitis and lord only knows what else arising if it's bad. What did your vets say when they had diagnosed this? It always amazes me that people don't get a detailed description of what it is and what the prognosis is when difficult diseases are diagnosed. Maybe write all your questions down and ring the vets for clear info. Good luck.

A small navicular bone cyst was found on my mum's QH's off fore last April (2wks after my mum bought her - unvetted and uninsured). The plates were sent to the Vet School and they said they'd never seen one that small and they wouldn't even consider operating on it. It was just left at that, vet gave no futher help, advice or info as they clearly just didn't know. So for the past 18mths I've been scrabbling about trying to find some answers, help, advice and suggestions.

She's my mum's horse so it was left in her hands but I've been sticking my nose in. Even though it's just a cyst in one leg that shouldn't effect her she is lame all round (compensating?). I've tried out just about every type of shoeing and she is currently unshod but I think I'm going to have to accept there is no cure and make the decision

She's currently on one danolin a day, up from 1/3 a day.

I hope you have a better vet than me who knows what (s)he is talking about and can help you through this. Wishing you all the luck in the world. I'll follow this thread with interest as I hope that I'll learn something that will help me too.

It amazes me that vets can't give detailed answers. I badgered them constantly as they just brushed me off, I STILL don't have any of the answers I wanted/needed. They just said it's so small it won't affect her although it obviously is. The vet's advice was to breed from her

talk about a red rag to a bull with my mum, taken me a year to talk her out of it. I don't have the luxury of choice when it comes to vet practices, even as it stands this practice is 30mins away which is a long time in an emergency, the rest are over an hour.

Friend's horse had a cyst on the navicular bone of a front leg. She had Tildren and corrective shoeing/trimming and came sound.

Don't know about all four legs- poor horse!
