Navicular OCD lesion with small tear in DDFT.

Hey, if I make a mistake please forgive me- I am new to the forum. I just wondered if anyone had any experience with OCD lesion on the navicular leading to small tear in the DDFT? My horse has recently been diagnosed through MRI and isn't responding to the joint injections. We tried bar shoes which he hated, so are now about to try Avanti shoes- please note barefoot is not an option with him. He has had cartrophen and being managed with exercise, but I would be grateful if anyone had their own experiences. He is a 13 year old Belgian warmblood, has worked elementary/medium but had a fairly quiet life. He was diagnosed in November. I have worked with horses for a long time but not seen a DDFT injury of this type that is not responding to treatment, the vet thinks prognosis is fair.
 
Have you used the search facility on here? If you put DDFT tear or navicular CD you may find something. Sorry no one has answered your post, sometimes its because its too new, or sometimes its because people have no experience of the question. Hope you find the search facility helpful x
 
Given that even vets are recognizing that the only long term treatment and management for navicular is barefoot, I’m not surprised that you havne’t Had many responses.

To release the pressure on the DDFT, you really need to beef up the digital cushion, and it isn’t going to happen with shoes on.
 
Barefoot. Corrective shoeing does not and cannot help. Have you heard of rockley farm? That's the best place to start to understand more about it.
 
Thankyou for your replies. Barefoot isn't not an option with him as I mentioned in the original post. He doesn't have navicular syndrome- the navicular is both fronts is healthy but has one defect with is causing the DDFT problem, which is why proving quite tricky to treat. I have looked into rockley farm but because he is kept where I work it is tricky to afford to send him somewhere else, but I will keep looking into all the options with him and see what we can do.
 
I think you are confusing navicular syndrome with actual damage or deterioration of the navicular bone itself.
It has now been proven that any changes to the bone are the end stage of the breakdown process which starts with soft tissue issue such as a tear on the DDFT.
Navicular syndrome is a term used for issues that affect the area at the back of the hoof where the navicular is located, also referred to as the caudal.

My own horse was diagnosed by mri 18 months ago, he too is a Warmblood and was schooling at elementary/ medium level. The mri showed a tear to the DDFT, navicular bursitis and collateral ligament damage. In his case prognosis was poor.

Hoof balance is vital for healing & rehab in these horses.
Why do you say barefoot isn’t an option for your horse? Mine had his shoes off a month after the mri and was visibly sounder and physically more comfortable in his whole body from the day that happened.

I agree that the lack of responses are because you are discounting the thing that most people would recommend.

Maybe people could hep you overcome the issue with barefoot if you expand?
 
Again, this horse cannot go barefoot because of his environment and his anatomy, three vets and my farrier all agree that it would be unfair to expect him to manage his injury and then cope with the transition to barefoot. I was more looking for experiences with people's own horses on prognosis and future.

I am disappointed with the response received from what I was told was a supportive and helpful place to ask advice, I am not discounting people's opinions but I also don't agree with them in this current situation. Barefoot can solve a host of problems but as you all know it is not the answer for every horse. I have worked in the industry for 20 years and do have my own experience but I just wanted to speak to others that may have been able to share their own stories.

What exactly have the 3 vets and farrier said with regards to barefoot. many do not know much about barefoot horses but it would be refreshing to hear about some that do.
 
What a charming attitude you have. People on here ARE being supportive and giving you FAR FAR better advice than your vet and farrier. Go your own way though. We'll still be here when you come back in 6 months time saying that horse is still lame and pts is only option.

No such thing as a horse that can't go barefoot. Please don't dismiss it. It is honestly the ONLY thing that will help your horse.

Your problem is that you are looking for a miracle.

The bare and horrible fact is that if your horse cannot go barefoot then his prognosis of returning to full work is somewhere near nil and any reasonable level of work maybe 20% at best.

Since this was not what you wanted to hear, I did not post before. You are being unreasonable in criticising the forum for not giving you support, when the syndrome you describe has a very poor prognosis in shoes. The success stories simply don't exist for you to be given them.

Can you put up the x rays? A cyst into the bone can be irrelevant. My experience is that a spur out of the bone into the ddft is disastrous.

What an incredibly hurtful comment. I'm a kind person and you have never met me or my horse. I will no longer be posting on this forum.

You need to understand that the reason you are not getting those experiences posted is that they haven't happened. The majority of the success stories on here are as a result of a barefoot transition, for all sorts of horses. You have then accused people who have taken the time to respond as unsupportive.

Now I am having a brainfart but there is a shoe produced in this country by a farrier which essentially is a half shoe with a pad that extends past the heel, this means that the back of the hoof can expand and contract as it should but while protecting the sole etc. Would this be an option for you? I shall try and remember the name.

Yes, it was a harsh comment and for that I apologise. Dont flounce off though just because someone/me said something blunt. You will get amazing advice and support here but only if you're open to ideas that are different than your current view.
