Or not as the case is!

My boy is a welshy (possibly x arab according to his previous owner tho I cant see how!) When I had him she used a solo comb as he wasn't fond of having his mane pulled, and it looked neat and tidy.
I kept it in order, but for the first time let it grow over winter (I prefer full manes, plus it helps with warmth). Now it's a straggly mess

The bottom half of the mane is quite thin and wispy, the top part is very full and thick.
I'm reluctant to use the solo comb again as (having never used one previously) it always looks like I used scissors- in fact I can do a neater job with scissors

I've started to pull it to try and get it in order again, but his previous owner was right- it is nigh on impossible. Doesn't matter if you do it after exercise or not, if he's calm already and if there's no distractions, once you've done one 'pull' he gets agitated and twirls round, and oddly enough I like my toes not to be stood on.

I've always had natives previously with full manes and had no problems, but his just hasn't grown out nicely, hence why I want to neaten it up again! I can do a neat and tidy job of pulling- but not on ponios who refuse to stand still!

Help?!

my old pony had a ridiculous mane. it was so thick and stuck out at all angles. he hated having it pulled but the solo comb look looked horrific on him, just made it worse. i would take him for a really good gallop and then we would twitch him and pull it, it worked for hiim. it wasnt so much that he didnt like it- he would stan still without a twitch he just would be happier twitched as he didnt try and lean his neck towards oyu making it harder for you to pull the mane.
could you get someone to show you how to use the solo comb?

Use the sissors to cut to the length that you want flip the mane over to the other side and just neaten + remove some of the hair make sure its not all equal then flip it over and just use the solo comb through the hair until it looks nice, its easy dont worry about it

you can use a mane rake I think they are called.

its like pulling the mane but without hte "pulling" it thins it and you can do it to length etc.....

He must be a full welshie if he hates having his mane pulled! I've never met one who will tolerate it! I have no idea why though. I had to do my old boy a little bit at a time - it would take about 2 weeks to get it right, as I could only manage about 6 "pulls" before he would start throwing his head around everytime I went near him, so i'd do a little bit morning and night and would get there in the end. I use a rake on my current horse's tail and as long as you keep on top of it it looks good. As soon as it gets a bit long though it looks awful! I've never tried it on a mane as he's good for mane pulling.
