hi
a mare tonight has lost her foal and is on the way to hospital as i post ? womb coming out
dont know full story as yet about what has happened since i left the yard but the vet came out today and gave the mare both a rectal and vaginal using neat hibiscrub on the glove
after this the mare was very uncomfortable and straining the vet said to give it an hour to settle and if it had not settled by 2 hours to ring again as she could of brought on the delivery
the mare in this time was showing early signs of labour pacing round arching her back and resp rate increased

the owner want s me to try and find out about the hibiscub and this causing the problems that have happend as above

can anyone advise please
thanks

neat hibiscrub? not watered down?
i know your not supposed to use hibiscrub without water as it burns the skin.
but the vet must know what he's doing and must be a reason.
when you find out let me know!

the owner wanted her checking as she according to cover note was nearly 3 weeks over due
owner bought mare and found out it was pregnant old owner said it was covered but the scan was negative
the mare had been out with a colt after this but it was late on last year
the mare was bagging up so the vet said it was prob due and that the original covering had took
as far as i know at this time the foal was too young and died
so it was from the colt covering her

the owner thinks the hibiscub being neat as caused this and has asked me to try and find out

i thought internals were all done with a lubricating gel
hibiscrub neat and not diluted is strong stuff

Thats not actual true. Hibiscrub can be a irritant to Mucous membranes but does not burn the skin and can be used neat (as it is on swabs when scrubbing up for theatre). I would be speaking the senior vet about this. Its really hard researching on the internet as you are going to get opinions of every possible sort.

I hope the poor mare gets over this. So horrible for all involved.

also sounds like rubbish. are you sure it wasnt a red lubricant?

also, an internal sweep would be enough to cause labour, especially in a horse over due...

Are you CERTAIN it was neat Hibiscrub and not lube gel? It may also have been Hibisol which is a routine solution for cleaning the hands.

I doubt neat Hibiscrub was used as its not really suitable for use near mucous membranes as it can be a n irritant.

chlorhexidine Hellspells! Sorry to be pedantic.

(Chlorohexadine (Novasan) - chlorhexidine diacetate, it isnt the same as Hibiscrub.)

Sorry can't help on the hibiscrub front but wanted to say that I know a mare whose womb came out when she had her last foal. Luckily there was someone around when the mare foaled and got the vet out. His quick action saved mare and the foal is now 14 months old

does not sound right to me i have seen them use idion solution to clean them up before they go in with a handfull of lube but never hibi scrub i thought that was for external use only. Call vets and speak to the highest vet there and see what they say!

ok bit more info
yes it was definately hibiscrub
foal died it was not due think it was either 3 or 6 months early still not found out properly
mare womb came out also
she has spent 4 hours in surgery next 3 days critical as she tried pushing it back out and as it was out a while there a risk of bacterial infection
