After my manes have been rubbed out this winter i am going to try removing my hoods. I was thinking of getting a snuggy hoods type instead.
Can anyone recommend one that doesnt rub the mane out or do they pretty much all do it.
I would want it to be worn all the time if poss.
Have tried bossy bibs mane saver - complete waste of time and money
Any other suggestions would be appreciated

Thanks :)

A lot of the probelm is that the neck gets too hot and it is that as well as any rubbing makes the mane fall out. If you don't want bare necks I find it is best to get rugs with a detachable neck and use a relatively thin neck bit. Keeps the weather off but doesn't over heat.

If there is, I want to know about it!!

Poor H has a bald section maybe 8" long - the rest of his mane is lush and long; I'm going to have to chop/thin it all to make it look a bit more inconspicuous! I have rugs with integrated necks for next year - in case that helps.

Out with the MegaTek, too.

I will watch this thread in case anyone has a brilliant idea :rolleyes:

I have had to chop the bottom half of one mane off and thin and shrten the other one just to make it look reasonable.
I dont find combos any better, one of mine is in combos and his had rubbed quite bad :(
I am going to get detachable hoods and try not to put them on

Both my big boys have a lovely long section of mane from ears to half way down the neck then NOTHING til just above their withers. **sigh**

I've bought neckless rugs in the NY sale, so hopefully they'll start growing out before summer.

Def works to keep mane if you only use neck rugs rarely (i.e. in the worse weather) and don't let them overheat.

I now let my guy's manes grow a little longer going in to winter to help them have some natural neck coverage.

If its for the stable you want. I use a duvet with a duvet cover that can be taken off and washed regulary. I only use it in extreme cold and fold it down in the day if shes in. She has a combo for the feild when its really cold if not has a no neck rug on. I fond this works really well and her main is still perfect even though shes actually had the duvet on alot this winter when its been cold. I plaited her at the weekend and the last bobble was nearly under the saddle her manes stayed so well.
I do wash the duvet cover at least twice a week and keep her mane as clean as possible as i find that helps stopping the rubbing too.

detachable necks work...

also Rio basically lived in his weatherbeeta freestyle combo and his mane still looks like this...

kept it covered in mane and tail and made sure he wasnt too hot and occationally plaited it as its long but not much other then that... sorry the photo is crap i hadnt groomed him at the time just folded his rug back :o

I use these when mine are rugged in winter. I like how there is a built in shoulder guard, to help with rug rub.

or these, Again with a built in shoulder guard. :) I find neither of these rub out my boy's manes...

Here's GK in winterwith his hoods on. He has the cotton over the lycra one to protect his plaits as he had a show the next day

And here is GK's mane after being under a hood all winter... Not the best pic, and it was short because I pulled it.

I am soooo jealous of that mane :) interestingly i think it is the stable rugs that are doing it not the turnouts. My horses have there rug changed every night and are rubbed and yet the other horses on our yard that have turnouts left on 247 still have manes!

I have one of the new style weatherbeeta heavy weights and my horses mane looks exactly the same as summer!
It has wither pads to lift the rug off the mane
Not a rub in sight! Brilliant as she will need plaited soon

My other horse has the old style weatherbeeta and his mane has rubbed unfortunately

No neck, really the only thing that works:( I just removed and stored all my necks and then we had the cold snap. Poeh. Please.... No more frost
