My mare has just had a high trace clip and I have been using a neck cover both in the stable and in field. She doesn't have much mane anyway but already it is disappearing! Should I leave the cover off? I don't mind the mud but it has been really cold and wet. She has a Rambo Duo with a shiny nylon lining. What do the rest of you do if you have a thin mane?!

My boy loses a section of mane every winter, but as he has a full clip I'd rather he had some protection on his neck as he's getting on. It only just grows back by the time its time to rug up again!

That's why I don't use neck covers any more! Pony is fully clipped but goes out without a neck cover on and is fine. Neck covers are a recent innovation - just think before that horses coped fine without them!

I posted yesterday about the same thing and only had one response. I was think about getting one of those lycra neck covers but wasn't sure if it would work. My horse is fully clipped but if I don't rug her up well then it grows back way too quickly. Have already clipped twice this winter.

Mine has a blanket clip and no neck covers - I hate the things, as long as the horse has a nice warm rug covering it's body there is no problem, we coped without these these things 10 years ago why all the fuss about them now?? I hate seeing horses with 1/2 their mane missing come spring.

Mine has a Snuggy hood. I still put the neck cover over the top. Last year was her first year keeping her mane lol

I sold my Duo cos that's what happened to my horse, he now has a lyrca hoodie and i've cut off head and bit of neck, so it's a bit higher than the bibs you can buy (so it covers the lower part of mane and withers, and this winter we still have mane

, so we're back to hoodie

Thanks, i might leave neck off especially as she has some hair on her neck. Actually i do remember my first horse was clipped out and all we had was one of those canvas New Zealand's which weighed a ton and leaked! I know I never worried then about whether to put on a lightweight, mediumweight, mediumlite, neck on or off etc.............!

My wimpy tb has various rugs with neck covers. I use the detachable ones mostly and take the neck cover off at night. She only gets the neck cover on during the day if it is really, cold or rainy or snowy. She is fine with this and no problems with her mane. If you think about it, if you have a hat on 24/7, your hair would get pretty brittle and start to break too.
Why does she need the neck cover on all the time?

Anyone any ideas how to help mane grow back once its gone? Horse has allergy to flys so has to wear fly rug in summer, and it took out half the mane???

I use a Lycra body rug in the stable and a Stuggy Hood for turnout. Stable or T/O rugs over the top. So far, so good. No mane rubs. Last year, the worst offender was a Rambo Wug. Rubbed away all the mane 1/2 way up the neck

for growing back look up megatek hair rebuilder.

OP I would leave it off. as said recent invention really more about keeping them clean sometimes

Mine wears his snuggy hood )sweetitch one with fringe cut off) with turnout rug and neck cover both in the field and in the stable and so far his mane isn't rubbed at all. He has sweetitch and he's grey so the snuggy hood is a lifesaver.
