Hi Guys

Been up to the horse this evening and spied this on his neck:

The scuff/cut he had on Sunday so it can't be related to that?

He doesn't get upset if you touch it, meaning i've squished it right down but can't feel anything. It's not hard, it's not soft, there isn't a puncture wound, no pus, no blood, no nothing - its just there! It's like it has air in it but not like bubblewrpa, if you get what i mean!! He's just his normal self - not grumpy, still grazing, not lathargic, he's alert and persistently frisks you for goodies. He's not been out of the field or off the yard for about a month (he's only 3yrs old) and just lives with another horse who hasn't been off the yard either. He's had a lightweight rug on this week so I wondered if maybe it could be a heat lump (if they even get them) or he could have been bitten by a midge and it's maybe an "allergic" reaction, like a person could get to a bee sting?

If you think it's something really horrid, please break this news gently!!

My boy had something similar, he didnt have the lumps but he had the scabby/hairless bits which must be an allergic reaction to something out in the field, they didnt bother him one bit and they have disappeared now and the hair is starting to grow over :)

I love you :D

He is a Thoroughbred and he is a bit of a Princess so I kinda figure that scuffs and bits missing probably wouldn't happen to a more robust looking creature! He's only been at that yard a month (private yard at the back of the owners home - so lucky to have found that!) and there are just the two of them in a 4 acre field when we came from a yard with 20 horses on a field a smidge smaller than that so nothing grew, never mind grass!

Oddly, he does sometimes have a snotty nose when the weather is warmer so maybe as you say it is an allergic reaction? Friends on yard duty and riding him tomorrow so she'll have a look at him for me - fingers crossed its no worse as its my birthday weekend!! :)

My horse had it last year, is there any nettles in your field? Mine had nettle rash once I moved him it went.

There are some nettles but quite an assortment of thistles also. We've not been there long - only a month and where we were had nothing at all due to so many horses so its sounding more like a reaction to something he's come across. I'll keep an eye, but big sigh of relief to both feedback so far!!!

I got my boy about 6 weeks ago and same as you he had the rash which went and then a little bit of a snotty nose, could be from the stress of moving and maybe catching colds and nasties from strange horses and fields - same as a child at nursery really :)

Love the fact you describe him as a Princess lol! brilliant

Mine started with a smaller lump the it got quite large, like your horse it wasn't painful I washed with Hibiscrub the next day it was gone. He was eating over a low fence and the nettles were on the fence line touching his neck. I did ring the vet for advice. Mine like yours was a sensitive soul. Hope he's better tomorrow.

My boy had something similar to this and it turned out to be a haematoma from a kick, although I have heard of similar from horses running into gate / fence etc.

My boy similarly was fine in himself, wasn't worried about being poked / prodded. Might just be worth considering if he hasn't moved fields recently?

I had the vet out and he drained quite a lot of blood from it and it gradually went down over about 4-6 weeks. He always had a bit of a mark there afterwards but nothing that slowed him down, or made him any more sensible :)

Could be many things. My first reaction would be a bug bite and it would not concern me. Seeing some scratches/trauma in that area tells me it *could* be related and be some sort of reaction/swelling/mild infection or more likely a small haematoma coming from the trauma site. Keep a close eye on it as a haematoma can grow quickly. If it gets worse obvisouly have vet out asap. If it stays as is or gets better fairly soon I would leave it be and let it go away on its own. This is just what I would do and maybe sending these pics to your vet or at least a call to the vet may be more helpful
