Neck rugs on turnouts for heavy rain

Hi, I’ve never really used neck rugs so don’t have any experience, my amigos and rhinos didn’t seem to need them, but the weatherbeeta I’ve recently purchased gets really wet down the chest during heavy rain which of course also then soaks into the liner.
would adding a neck cover during the heavy rain help? He’s a native type so not worried about getting cold, but wet equals cold. he's only rugged when cold, wet and windy together.
Any experiences? Also what yo look for with fit?

I’ve got rugs with and without necks. The ones with necks still get wet on the chest in torrential rain, there’s not a lot you can do about it due to the gap between the chest straps and neck. The ones without a neck do get more wet on the shoulders as the rain runs down from the withers. I don’t notice any difference in waterproofness between fixed and detachable necks.

I find that if they leak at the front then a neck won’t do much to help. It’s just the way the rug sits on a horse that makes it leak.

I find with a neck it does keep the front of the horse dry.

I find the rain gets in down the shoulder without a neck. Adding a neck attachment stops it (so the spudkin is permanently in a neck these days, much to his chagrin )

Thank you all, maybe I will give it a try, just trying to justify £45 on a neck, when the rug itself only cost £70! Plus it won’t match in colour

Sometimes you can get necks separately cheaper if you don't mind them not matching (most of mine don't). I recently got a discounted weatherbeeta neck for £15 so it's worth looking around x

If your horse has got a decent neck (natives typically more cresty than blood types), then you’d probably be better with a ‘combo’ rug, where the hood is integrally attached. Mainly because the necessary connector fittings, zips, Velcro etc, and the two edge seams, create more bulk. You might also find that the throat closures on the hood would need extending if he’s cresty.
If it’s a hood connected to your rug by 3 elasticated clips, this type tends to blow back in strong winds, and can let rain run inside as before.
Since your previous Horseware rugs didn’t have this problem that the Weatherbeeta does, maybe the rug style is simply less suitable? Good luck.

Now I find the opposite, combos rub the mane out on a big neck. Also it's often possible to buy a bigger size hood if it's detachable, though my rug wardrobe has plenty of hoods where I've had all the straps lengthened to go round - I think Rambo are the only one where I haven't had this problem.

I do agree about the clip on ones blowing up in the wind, velcro is definitely the way to go imo.
