Ned's hurt himself

It's quite hard to see from the photos, but Ned has hurt his mouth/chin area.
It's swollen and the lump is quite hard, it's clearly very painful. I gave him a treat to see if he'd eat it and while he ate it, it looked tricky. He did have a few mouthfuls of grass too, but that also looked sore.

We're thinking bee/wasp sting, as there's no actual wound. If it's not gone down by the weekend, we'll get the vet out. Just wondering if anyone else has had similar?

if hes having trouble eating then id be bad for getting the vet out sooner rather than later. Have you checked inside his mouth to make sure his teeth are ok?
 
I checked inside his mouth briefly, teeth look ok as far as I can tell, but of course I'm no expert. Part of his gum was black though, I'm not sure if that's always been like that, or is a bruise of some sort. I'm going up again tomorrow and I've told someone to look at him this evening.
I'm hoping it is just a sting and nothing like an abscess :(
 
poor pony - how old is he?
when did he last have the dentist?

a sore, hard lump under the jaw with no mark is highly likely to be a tooth/jaw problem
i would really talk to the vet - if it is an abscess then you may want it delt with sooner than later (it can really damage the bone and cause all sorts of complications)

have you taken his temperature? he may need antibiotics

keep an eye on how much he's eating as if its painful to eat you may find he gives up bothering and starts to loose weight

Hope it does turn out to be nothing and is goes in the next day or so - fingers crossed!
 
He's 11...and...I don't know. He's not mine yet and I've not got into the shoeing or health related stuff. I was going to get YO to make me a list of things he's had done and when and when they need doing again...but she's gone :( She's away for the next 10 weeks!

The lady who's running the yard for the time being knows and she's the one having a look this evening. I'll be seeing her tomorrow morning, so we'll have a poke around together and then decide what to do then. I'm so worried! Ned's never really had anything wrong with him before :(
 
It could be teeth, or it could be what our babypony did and be a tiny hawthorn stuck in his chin which got infected. Whatever it is it's likely to be a vet job.

Keep him on soft food till the vet can have a look at him, and if it starts to swell more, he looks off colour, or he runs a temperature then it's becoming an increasingly urgent vet job.

ps Having been in the situation you're in WRT impending purchase of a loan horse, I'd be tempted to offer to pay for the vet myself. The 'limbo period' can be a bit tricky with owners and they can get a bit funny about responsibilities and expectations. You don't want to overstep the mark by calling the vet without 'permission', but then you want to do right by the horse.
 
Buddy got an horrific bit/sting, it was on his lower jaw and popped, oozed really smelly puss for a day then after lots of cleaning it went down and healed over. Swelled up all round it though, looked awful. Can you see an entry point in the lump?
 
My mare had something similar once a bit further up under her jaw, I called the vet out and like EstherYoung said it turned out to be a little thorn that had got stuck and infected.

Vet gave me a couple of bute sachets and told me to squeeze the puss out of it and it would heal itself.

I have never seen so much oozy goo!! But all healed up nicely in a few days.

Fingers crossed it's something simple, poor Neddypants :(
 
I'd get the vet to come before the weekend, you don't want to have to pay for weekend call out!

I wouldn't hold fire if it is affecting him eating. You don't want any added problems because he isn't eating.
 
An update!

Lump is slightly bigger and harder than it was. I had a poke around in his mouth and I couldn't see/smell anything, but I'm not ruling out an abscess, as obviously I'm not a vet :P his teeth don't look any different either.

He seems to be eating ok now too. The lady who was going to look at him this afternoon said she'll go halves with me if we get the vet out, as her pony needs a looking at too.
Here's hoping it's gone down by tomorrow morning, but if not...I have a phone call to make.

I thought he wasn't yours yet? That's not on at all for you to have to pay vets bills for someone elses horse! I know you love him, and I appreciate you want the best for him - but his owner should be taking responsibility for bills like this. He's not on loan to you is he? If he is, I'll shut up!

I do feel a bit cheated, as it's all happened very suddenly. Technically I am loaning him at the moment, it's all very confusing. I don't know what's going on half the time.
I do understand why YO has done what she's done, it's very personal so I won't go into it. It's not my place to tell.
I honestly don't mind paying, but it does make me want to fork over the £400 to have him now, as I can drive and I can afford it, so he'll have one on one care while she's away. I'm having my hours changed for the better at work too, so it's easy to get to the stables and not rush for work. Huff!

He's still her horse, so I'd say she's liable for any vet treatment required whilst she's bogged off on an extended holiday! (I'm making a massive assumption here, and am very sorry if she's having hospital treatment or some other non-nice reason)

Im guessing you, being you, Nah, have a lot of this agreement loaning Ned based on goodwill...? Please don't be too kind and stump up your hard-earned cash if you don't have to. I take it the lady looking after the yard (it's an RS right?) has authority to call out vets when required whilst she is in charge?!

I just don't think you should be frittering money you could be spending on things for you and Ned when you do officially own him, on something you shouldn't have to pay for, because you're a kind person (and this lady is not f she's expecting you to pay).

If I'm way off the mark here please PM me and put me straight - on my phone so PMs tricky hence posting this on here, hope it's come across as I meant, and not accusatory!
 
It sounds a bit complex with the loan, but I think unless you have sole use of him the rs should pay for a vet. Any chance, assuming you trust the real owner, you could get her to speak to lady in charge at the moment? Or offer to pay for vet but it comes off the £400 purchase price?
I've seen two horses similar to Ned & both had fractured their jaws. It's not as serious as it sounds, both cases the treatment was lots of painkiller & iirc about 3-6 weeks off work. But it is painful, especially to eat without painkillers. And if it is an abcess he'll likely need antibiotics as well at the least.
And I don't think its fair you should have to pay for a vet.
 
Update 2:

YO isn't away on holiday, I totally understand why she left. It's not a life threatening reason or whatever, but it's not nice and very upsetting for all of us. She's in the Caribbean, lucky woman! But I doubt she's enjoying it very much at all.

Friend came over to see him last night to have a look, as she's more experienced than me and has a bunch of very knowledgeable friends. I was extremely dubious however when one of her friends said give him Piriteze :O I thought I might as well give it a go. I go up to see him this morning and hey presto! It's gone!! I'm almost certain it was a sting now.

Phew! Panic over. I've asked that he isn't ridden over the weekend. Not that anyone else rides him, but just to make sure.
 
Final update: Whatever it was. It popped.
I didn't see it pop and there's no pus or anything left in there.

Just FYI, I didn't end up riding him.
