Hubby has a lovely 8 year old 17hh tb, hes sooo sweet in every way and hes such a reliable horse to ride. His only down side is that when hes rode he likes to have his head up and really forward, maybe it was the way he was trained in his racing days.

Well hubby finds it hard to control him then at the beach and he would like to trian him to bring his head in a bit to make him that bit more controllable. He rode him with draw reins but everytime he would trot he would let the draw reins slide a bit so wasnt really working out for him.

Was going to try side reins on him but hes a wee bugger to lunge at times. I also read that side reins can be harsh on the mouth. Can you do flatwork with side reins? Or can you only lunge with them?

When hes got his head out, hubbys hands are near the buckle of the reins!!!!

A Market harborough set fairly loose should do the trick.

If you have the time, some lungeing with a chambon would strengthen his back muscles so he is able to carry himself.

ETS: I hate side reins, they don't forgive if the horse stumbles or work the muscles properly and finally, why would you want a 'fixed' rein????

please don't use a fixed rein like a side rein. draw reins are absolutely not the answer either. a loose Abbot Davis balancing rein, if you really must use a gadget rather than trying to solve the problem, would be about the best thing, i think.

Riding in side reins is dangerous and draw reins should only ever be used be VERY experienced riders. So, problem is that the Horse is pulling the reins out of your husbands hands?? Easy soluton, get him to bridge the reins, that's what jockeys do, Horse is then pulling on himself. You don't need gadgets.

Thanks everyone, i dont like side reins to be honest, i was going on advise of a friend who told him to try draw reins, he only used them once. Our main factor is that the horse is comfortable and we are stressing him. Weve never had a horse that held its head so high, with him having such a large neck it can be hard to bring his head in.

When at the beach he was carrying his head so high that he didnt see a hole in the sand until too late, hubby went flying and its damaged his confidence a bit.

Neither of us are experienced riders, i have seen side reins used or rather abused and i dont want that for him.

No reins arent coming out of his hands, its just that he ends up with very little reins to hold as his neck is so long when he holds his head up. Give hubby the feeling of not being in control.
