Sorry but I feel in need of a hug if any are going spare. We lost our beautiful jack russell Barney on Christmas day. He went to sleep and didn't wake up (poorly heart), he was 15 1/2 years old. He was my best friend and I miss him so much. We took him for cremation (they opened on boxing day especially for us) and tomorrow my husband is going to bring him home. Tonight it has really started to hit me and I can't stop crying. So if any hugs are going spare please can I have one or two. Thank you.

How very sad for you all. To be part of a family for 15 1/2 yrs is a great achievement and they are just like a child. Try to remember the very happy times you will have had together and I hope he didnt have too much pain.. Our dog is 11 in March and shes lost an eye and has a cataract in the remaining one. Shes also deaf in one ear too and I absolutely dread the day when shes not around any more.

Bug hugs and warmest wishes to you xx

Hey MP,

So so sorry to hear that. My pets are my children. I'm a veterinary Nurse by trade and have made animals my life. I know just how much pain you are in - its never easy losing your best friend.

I lost my cat Scampy to the road a few months ago and I can't even think about him without choking up still. He managed to climb over the gate and pass away in the garden. I will never forgive myself for not finding him sooner and holding him in my arms wislt he slipped away.

You might not feel like it at the moment but when you are feeling a little stronger look up the poem the rainbow bridge (google it) and I know its a bit cheesey but it does make me feel a little better when I feel down.

If you want any support you can always PM me I fully understand your loss xxx

oh you poor thing im sure you gave him a lovely home , but thats no consolation , i lost my dogs two years ago , cavalier king charles, and to make it worse i cant have another due to work, i still get upset now so , take a deep breath and just take it one day at a time , when i lost mine i found it helped me heaps to watch the video of them, funny seeing them alive again took a lot of the pain away , sending big hugs and bless you for giving him nearly 16 years of love and a great home . xxxxx

Thanks everyone. I just needed to talk to people who would understand. He was the most perfect dog (I'm biased) and we are lucky to have his sister (nearly 15) and two of his sons (13 1/2) still with us. We saw him for the first time when he was just one week and one day old. We thought we were going to lose him on the day before christmas eve and my husband stayed up all night with him, thankfully we got another 36 or so hours with him. He looked like he had just curled up in his bed and gone to sleep so I don't think he was in any pain when he went. I just can't get used to him not greeting me in the mornings.

So sorry to hear this, at christmas too, how awful. I'm glad for you and him that he went peacefully in his sleep. 15 and a half years is a real achievement with a bad heart.

I told my 11 year old daughter about the rainbow bridge to help her cope with his death, she's doing better than me! I can't face reading the poem just yet but I will read it again when I feel ready. We lost our cat Hermes in October aged 19 1/2 years so our little family is getting smaller and smaller.

Its lovely isn't it?

You're never to old to have hopes and dreams and I keep telling myself that one day I will meet Scampy again and he will lick my face and purr in my arms once more. Be strong, put on a brave face, and have your quiet moments thinking about your beloved friend you have lost x
