been dying to get my boy a new saddle for ages now. my dad says he'll half in with me at christmas to get a new one so time to start saving as i want a good one.

currently have a wintec - hate it. with a passion. great to clean and all that but so uncomfortable for lengthy rides and i dont think my boys likes it much either to be honest. wouldnt say no to another synthetic but it would have to be super comfy for us both. wouldnt mind a second hand leather one either.

where should i start looking? i had the saddle i have now when i got him so never really had to look for one myself before. would it be best to get the local saddler to bring a few of what he has to get an idea of what fits best?

any help appreciated, totally clueless!

You need to have an idea of his shape then you can start looking at different models. You're best bet is to get the saddler out to tell you about his back and shape and see what he recommends.

It took me years to get the perfect saddle and it was through learning about his shape and which suited us both. He was 3 when I got him so had a lot of change to go through so we stuck to the wintec then. Through pretty much trial and error we now have an Ideal working hunter saddle which is amazing, suits his shape, suitable for what we're doing and also really comfy. To top it off I got it at a bargain price :)

YES! dont even bother looking before you know what you are looking for, otherwise you will end up buying something that doesnt fit and will probably struggle to get rid of again (especially at the moment). find out what saddles will most likely fit and then work out your budget. make your budget as high as you will possibly go and dont be tempted to go over especially on a second hand saddle (obviously depending on age and make of saddle). Have a look around local saddlers at their second hand saddles but bare in mind that they are going to be fairly expensive compared to the exact same thing if you bought it directly from the owner as saddlers usually charge around a 30% commission. look on ebay, preloved, saddles direct etc. there are a lot of nice saddles going for very little so dont pay more then you think its worth or in comparison to other saddles of the same make/type :)

hope thats a little bit helpful!

thanks guys will give the saddler a call then when the pennies start mounting up! shysmum dyou know ive always fancied one, used to ride a pony that had one and it was so comfy but didnt know if it would be any good for a tb. can u use them for jumping? dont do any showing so dont worry about anything like that.

I would look at all your friends saddles and sit on a many as you can to begin to develop an idea of which saddles suit you .
Having a saddle that really really suits you makes a huge difference so it's worth spending time researching o get it right.
