me and my mum are in a bit of a sad situation. we both brought a lovely safe cob 9 years ago, as an 8 year old and due to bad conformation and cushings, were at the point we feel he should be retired. currently, mum pays for him as i no longer ride him and she does. however, rupert is the only horse mum is riding so now he is retired, she wants another horse to continue on. but we cant afford it.
now we have a few options.
i start taking over the costs of rupert and move him to a cheaper yard, at grass livery (will be difficult to find somewhere as he is a laminitic and has to be kept strictly) and i start looking after him. im happy to do this, he is a family pet and i would rather keep him in the family at what ever cost. the only trouble is, im looking to move out next year and it will be difficult to keep up paying for house and horse.
or
mum keeps paying for him and he stays where he is and has been for 9years with his best friend, and just keeps him as a field ornament and she stops riding
or
we split the costs, but will still leave mum tight.
or
we have him PTS. which we both said we dont want to do. he has at least 5 years of happy retirement left and we would rather keep him going. my brother and his OH will be having kids soon and would love for rupert to see the third generation!!
and we dont know what to do
just wanted to see if anyone else could think of another way on how we could manage this. not fair on mum to give up riding. i want her to carry on. thanks in advance.
