I am writing a book, a Pride & Prejudice sequel, but throwing a bunch of horse stuff in.

Here are some descriptions of some points:

Darcy will be a racehorse breeder. Since he is supposed to be one of the richest men in England. I'd like to encorporate trips to racetracks of the time. Epsom, Newmarket, Ascot

I'd like Lizzy and Darcy to have a herd of Welsh ponies. When did Arab blood start infusing into the native ponies. When did they start becoming a breed unto themselves? When did they start dividing them in to sections, or at least calling them: Welsh Mountain Pony, Welsh Pony, Welsh Cob, etc.? in 1805, would've in been reasonable for Darcy to start breeding his own ponies in Derbyshire? Adding in Arab blood himself? What pony breeds were established? When did they start keeping records of breeding charts?

I would like Darcy to have his own hunt and need to outfit Pemberley with kennels, huntsmen, hounds. He would also shoot in season. In 1805, say, what sort of retriever and bird dogs were established? Full thoroughbreds were established, but would've they been used for hunting or did they have draft crosses (sort of like the ISH?)? Or did they ride TBs? Or were they just grade horses of a certain type or talent? In everyday life, the men wore tailed cutaway coats. Would've they worn them on formal hunts? Did they staghunt on horseback?

Did they have box stalls then or only straight stalls? Were all carriage horses' tails docked?

What breed or type of horse would been used for a lady's horse?

I am new here. Thank you for allowing me into the crowd!

You could probably contact the BHS for archived info?

Good luck with it all, can we have first read when it's finished?

All I can help with is the hunt horses would of been Cleveland Bays or Cleveland bay cross TBs. The carriage horses would of been Yorkshire carriage horses which are Cleveland Bay x TBs. The working horses would of been Cleveland Bays or heavy horses.

Hi, and Welcome.

Good luck with your research, the following may be of use : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Welsh_pony

I should think that a Native Pony forum would be able to help you a lot, or how about contacting the Welsh Pony & Cob society directly, if they can't help, or at least, point you in the right direction then there is no hope for them! Similarly the Cleveland Bay Society I suppose.

Perhaps there are Historical forums too? There must be, there are forums for everything else!
