I am entering my first dressage competition next month as a start towards eventing. It will be the biggest disaster since the Titanic sank as I have only been riding for 14 months but I intend to have fun regardless.... but what to wear? I am male and 52 so hardly a fashion icon. Should it be tweed or a black jacket given that I want to progress to eventing (if I live that long lol)?

If you have black I would wear it but only if you have it already otherwise tweed is perfectly acceptable at unaffiliated dressage competitions. Enjoy!

No idea about wear, other than I believe that tweed is the 'correct', but at the lower levels the don't mind black (I inadvertantly bought a black show jumping jacket

I would go for black if you were to event

Also long boots should be worn but im assuming you wouldnt wear jodphur boots and chaps anyway. Also you should wear white or beige breeches

Hey there!

Firstly HUGE congratulations and all the very best of luck at your first competition

In terms of colour I don't think it really matters at this level but if you need to go and purchase one especially I would go for black as it is the most appropriate colour to wear for most equestrian competitions and as such the more diverse choice

I was thinking sand coloured so when I fall off (inevitable) I can hide til its dark.
Seriously tho can you use tweed to showjump as part of eventing too?

Tweed is absolutely fine and is more common at unaffiliated events round my way in every discipline. That way you can save your cash until you really need three differerent outfits.

My friend (male) competes (SJ, stressage and ODE) in tweed, white shirt, tie and biege/sand breeches with black gaiters/boots or full length boots (black).

Good luck!!
