Hi.
I am debating whether to do the JN or the JPN at aldon at the end of the season. Just to give you an idea, I am competing a horse that has started eventing this year (Zebedee Zig Zag) and he has already done a 2day (unafilliated) but I do not want to overface him right at the end of the season, so I wonder if he would be more suited to the PN?

I emailed the organizer on the toughness of the courses, and got this reply

The 3DJPN will be same as for the adults- just seperate results etc -this has steeplechase and roads and tracks etc- There is no 2D PN!
The course for the 2DN incorporating the 2DJN will be a little more difficult than a 1Day Novice and will include steeplechase and roads and tracks etc.

Im sorry this is long. My horse is very talented and he is a superstar, but does have a problem with being on his own, so realistically I am worried about him being at a 2/3 day show on his own..though I am starting to crack this...

Ideas please I respect every reply

i would go for the 3D PN as hopefully then you will end on a high and wont lose any confidence (not saying that is likely but could happen!)

thats what Im thinking but then do I risk my horse for 3 days effectively on his own...at the 2day at SL he was nervy even though there were 2 other horses with him ... I find if i tack him up before loading him he goes straight in, and once worked hes ok(ish) but not sure if I should risk him for this course of days...?!

If you haven't yet completed a Novice ODE, then surely going straight in at a two-day Novice would be a big ask. It sounds like the 3DPN would be just up your street: your horse is comfortable at PN level so you can both enjoy being stretched by the steeplechase etc.

Do Aldon stable on site? If so, he'll be busy looking at everything going on around him. Perhaps an ideal way to accustom him to being without his friends. But if you stable off-site then this may be more difficult as he could find himself very lonely.

The 3DPN sounds like a social and fun event. Good luck!

nono hes done a novice and is going to have done 2more by the time aldon rolls around.
I rekon that I should do the JPN as I prob have more of a chance, and my dad (who will have to fund it) will prefer me to have a smile on my face after finishing/completing than being carted off with an injury...
but argh its so expensive!

You have to go clear XC twice at nov or above to do a Nov 2 day.

Thanks for that I've been wondering what the qualification is for the 2 day Novice - what about the sjing and do you know the timetable?

I would probably want to be really solid XC at N to do the N2D, scraping a qualification doesn't necessarily mean he/you're ready

What does your trainer think? I did PN3DE on a baby horse last season and it was great fun and course was definitely a bit stronger than a normal PN, having said that it was a bit of a dressage competition... Listen to what your instinct is telling you, it's probably right.

I would do the 3dpn. Its better to finish the season on a high rather than a disapointment or a scare. There is no need to rush things because you have next season too. Im there for the 3d opn.

My mare did PN 3day last season and it was a strong PN track and with the roads and tracks and steeplechase as well was a decent test. It was also fantastic fun - all the fun of a 3 day, without the stress of the size of fences!!!!!!!

yeah im pretty much decided on the 3dpn as he has more of a chance of having a nice run and as its the end of the season and the aldon hills, its better for him to run pn
though i have to confirm it with my dad 2moro...at least im going up to c him in london rather than demanding him to come here to me!
thanks guys though, def made me realise that first instincts really are the best!

Aldon used to be my favourite event to end the season.Firstly its a VERY demanding course with lots of hills so your horse got to be very fit ! We have not been there for a few years but the Novice course used to does ask quite a lot of questions. If your horse is competing on PN level i would end the season with the PN.People that has been competing Novice all season will do the Novice 2 day, Aldon is NOT an event where you take a horse that needs "nursing" around the course ! Good Luck !
You need to have 3 PN run clear XC with no more than 16 SJ penalties to enter a PN 3 Day
For the Novice you need 2 clear XC. http://www.britisheventing.com/documents.asp?section=000100010014&sectionTitle=Download+Area
