any help or advise is needed. I would like to show my two yr old colt this summer. What would i need to show him in - does he have to have a bit in as he is a colt?

This is the first time that i have done any youngstock classes - carnt you tell!!

So any advice or tips would be very much appreciated.

Thanks xx

I think while he is two you have a choice and can show in either a bridle or Halter, but your first priority should be ample control/brakes!! I took my horse out a lot as a youngster more for experience than anything and always took him in a bridle with a simple rubber bit as he got bigger to stop him being a liability in such an exciting evironment!

He is a welsh D, what is yours?

I showed Chancer in a small rubber show bit - you can get them for a few quid off ebay when he was 18 months. I changed it the following year to a copper small ring snaffle which he preferred to the rubber bit.

A two year old colt is to be bitted under most showing rules.

It depends upon the breed and what sort of show you have in mind. You will also have to check that entires are allowed at all.

Most shows have a rule that all entires, that are not foals MUST have a bit in their mouths. Certainly all stallions will have to! People use special stallion bits with brass horseshoe rings and a newmarket coupling, sidereins and a roller.

It will also depend upon the age of your colt, when it stops being a colt and becomes a stallion, the rules change.

The sort of halter/bridle you will need depends upon the breed.

Everyone has to start some where and if you don't ask you will never find out.

What breed is your lad and what classes will you be showing him in?

Because he is a two yr old you should have him in a bridle and bit, some people show in halters, but when taking youngsters (especially colts) to show they can get excitable (only natural) and it is better to be in control of him and being able to stop him if he decides to play up.

I have seen big strong grown men at show wrestling with yearlings with halters on because they are not strong enough to hold them when they are having a hissy fit.

My yearling colts were shown in halters with chains across the under jaw, i show my fillys & mares in white halters, but by the time my colts come to 2+ i usually bit them to keep them in check in the show ring.

You will pick these things up as you go along, enjoy your showing with him.

Yes as someone else said, depends on the breed.
The individual breed society will state what is allowed, or should be used.
For example you would not be able to show an Arab in a bit at that age.
You would not be allowed to use a stallion bit neither, until either 4 years of age or unless you had a licence for the stallion, again different rules for different breeds.
I personally would not use a bit if it was local showing at that age, however it depends on how well you can manage your colt.
Take a look at some classes that you will be interested in showing your colt in and get a feel for what other people are useing, a county level show though.

Or you could have a look at the breed society websites and see what they say perhaps.

I don't know about other breeds, but you can certainly show Arab colts with a bit as 2-year-olds - in fact even as yearlings. Here is my Arab boy as a yearling and as a 2yo, wearing the same bridle in both pics (it's rather hard to see cos it's a very fine bridle - just a single very thin strand of rolled leather):

thanks for all your advice

He is a welsh x portugese lusitano.

When i can figure it out how to i shall put some photos on here.

I just plan on taking him to some local shows, just so he gets use to different environments.

He is pretty well handed but a show enviroment is different.

Now we kinda have him sorted out - what would i wear?

Again thanks for all your help
