My dad had a really serious accident falling off my horse (still feel horrible about it) and managed to break both bones in his leg at the ankle joint and 3 months on is only just learning to walk. So for father's day i have promised to try and find him a new 100% safe horse, as he can't risk hurting himself again or will lose his foot. So this is where i need the help, do any of you wonderful horse and hound people know of any dealers or people that are selling a 16-16.2 horse that is a wonderfully safe hunter (as this is what my dad mainly does) I've rang a few people but as soon as i mention my dad's condition they change tone on how safe their horse actually is, very pleased they are honest, but just makes me think why not be honest from the start?! SO any helpers would be so much appreciated

I think to be fair you're ringing people and saying "no pressure but I need you to guarantee the horse will NEVER behave like a real horse, cos if it does my dad would lose his foot. No pressure, though". And I think people are panicking!

Realistically, all horses have the potential to do something like that. If it REALLY is as bad as you say, then your dad shouldnt be riding again. But if it isnt, then I suggest you just go and view the horse lots and lots, you could ride it first etc etc etc.

I wouldn't say i'm putting pressure on them, but i need make sure the horse is safe, as i'm sure anyone would for their dad. And personally i don't think he should be riding especially hunting, but i can't convince him otherwise, he's loved horses since he was a young boy and refuses to give up because of a silly accident, very determined. But i will definitely take you're advice on seeing lots of horses.

My OH broke his back last year falling off his 17.1hh hunter whilst practising for a dressage test  he was insistant on getting back in the saddle so i have let him take over my teenage showcob who is a fun, fantastic, safe ride and not too far off the ground! OH says its so much easier mounting/dismounting on a smaller, sturdier horse than the big horses he used to ride. He will be hunting him this winter except if they go through heavy plough as he did a check ligament 3 years ago so we have to be careful.

My point is that a weight carrying cob is a steadier person than many of the huge horses yet they will carry 15stone allday on the hunting field and dont cost the earth to buy or feed :)

Might it not be better to wait until autumn hunting begins to find a new horse? Most hunters are fat and unfit at this time of year and what may appear calm and safe now, may change when it becomes fitter.
I am always searching for these paragons of the hunting field, for my clients and I rarely buy outside of the season, because I like to try them out hunting, as that is what they are being bought for. If the seller refuses to let you have half a day (which rarely happens) you know it wasn't a hunter.
Best of luck with your search - they are out there.

thanks everyone for your words of wisdom, i've given up looking with the hopes that something will magically appear! Luckily we have another hunter at home who was off last season with a back problem, but has come back into work well and will hopefully stay in good shape for my dad. A lot of 'hopes' in there.

or pm me if you are looking - there is a nice coloured mare 16.3 (8yr old) on the yard for sale. Her big selling point is that she is nice to everyone and straightforward. She was actually up in Norfolk hunting last winter - apparently your dykes up there take some jumping?!. We are in Surrey - mare isn't mine but would be happy to pass on details if you are interested..

sorry Luci07 but i don't think your horse would suit my dad, he wants something smaller and not coloured, as he fell off my 17hh coloured
