on getting pony to balance in canter a bit more
and to stop tanking me down the long side
also need some more advice to get her to work properly
she was amazing yesterday, probs cos of the rain

but today was awful and i wanted to cry, she was strong and fighting all the time
i kept pushing her forwards and forwards, holding the contact; she then fought it and went on the forehand

i know i need a lesson but havent been able to get one in a while

HELP please

xx

have you tried doing small circles in all four corners? I've found it helped with some unbalanced babies and a 16yr old actually

even though it's really annoying to start with they soon start to come right

Also halt her at random places on the long side so she starts to listen to you to find out whats happening next.

Try not to get too frustrated it'll be worth the effort.

canter poles can help to even out a canter and get the horse to think a bit more too just keep work varied so she doesn't get into bad habits cos she knows what's coming

hope it gets a bit easier for you

wilmas 18
and its taken me two years to get her to think about carrying herself properly

she goes well after a while, just frustrating when she gets stubborn; i dont get angry though

canter poles help but i can never stride them out properly, and as our arenas so big she likes to bounce round the corner sideways and tank over them

ive tried doing loads of transitions down the long side, and she just fights and gets really really strong

thanks

full cheek snaffle with french link and keepers
i have recently put her in a running martingale (suggestion from richard barton)
and she goes ok in it, but fights it sometimes

when i got her she was in a cheltnham gag
then put her in a waterford
and then pelham
then pelham with port
and now snaffle; i do everything in that bit, hack out etc
shes stronger out hacking, but i manage and the same for jumping

i think you might have to be really strong and just insist that she does what you want. It's really hard but if you want her to work consistently she needs to know she can't get away with anything. i've had some real arguments with my two but now we're all happy and i very rarely have any arguments. I used to try and halt my horse, almost do it then he'd pull that extra bit and i'd say i couldn't do it but after getting shouted at by my trainer i managed it

Also if you've done alot of work with her since putting her in a snaffle you might get away with a stronger bit now at times cos she shouldn't be constantly pulling at you. I jump mine in a pelham and the rest of the time he's in a snaffle and he's been a different horse since i tried the pelham but i struggled with a snaffle or 3 ring gag for 2 years

now im more confident i am alot more firm

i really need a flatwork lesson; she normally sorts me out

but tonight it was like 6 o clock and mum then decided to tell me to hurry up cos she was going out :s since when was that happening :@
and she wouldnt let me walk home
but now im not at school i should have more time to keep going and going at it and get the result

thanks

head up and up and up
a flash
i dont think shes ever really opened her mouth or anything

she was awful in the pelham, got her tongue over it all the time and was a complete nightmare, we have sold the waterford and one pelham

how big is she hh? as with gags i got the waterford gag and my horse was a cob and i had to chnge his cheek straps to pony size as the gag also works on the poll not just the mouth. so maybe try that as worked well for my lad as he was same as your mare a pain for pulling and not working. soon sorted him.

14.2
very long in the neck and back, and awful lot of power from behind, and uses her neck to pull up and tankd

mum doesnt like gags :S
the first week we had her, we rode her in the cheltnham, the next week or so she made me ride her in the snaffle until she got the waterford

i think ive done well with her so far, i just know she can do so much more

gags are good for strong horses and i was told that chagning the strap so the gag works from the poll is how there ment to work not the mouth. sorry i am no help what works for one does not always work for another. i wish you all best in finding what works . will soon be asking same now my girls teeth have been done.....lol i have her in a snaffle cherry roller seems to be working well . touch wood.....lol

i think mum would prefer her in a snaffle of some sort, as its better for the attempted stressaging

thank you

so if anyone has a suggestion for a snaffle thats not a wilkie or hanging cheek or the one we have in atm it would be much appreciated
