So I've had my 10yo ish x tb gelding for about 10 months and he's been amazing on the ground but his riding isn't brilliant unfortunately - his walk and trot is fine but his canter work is awful he gets so worked up he unbalances himself and rushes until we can finally stop (he's in a snaffle) I'm hoping to compete next year so I really need to crack this has anyone got any schooling tips? I lunge about 3 times a week but don't use any lunging aids apart from side reins when I need them however lunging doesn't seem to work either is this just how he is or can I fix it?

It is hard to comment without seeing him, do you canter him on hacks? I found with my horse early on in his ridden career decent long canters, preferably on a gradient with my weight off his back really helped him find his balance, he now has a fabulous canter. If he is very unbalanced he will find it difficult to canter in a circle in the school. You need to keep it short and do lots of transitions. Do you have help from a decent flatwork instructor?

Yes I canter on hacks however where we are there aren't many safe places to canter as the majority or the time spent hacking is roadwork. I did get lessons but have recently moved (this has not affected his canter) so looking for someone new
