just registered , as getting Daughter who is 15 and has been riding since she was 5 and is quite experienced .
i have not told her about getting a horse as its a surprise for her, but need some advice, her instructor gave me some anf i see a horse whe would be happy to have a look at it.
I have seen 1 horse on a site, but not sure if it would be suitable, this is what it says

"Very good looking TB mare, with lovely attitude and temprement in and out of stable. 3 good paces just needs some more schooling and to furter her education with a competent rider. This mare would be eligible for race horse to riding horse classes but please dont let the fact she has been in training put you off she is a forward going ride but is sane and rubber snaffle mouthed. Jumps XC and just started jumping coloured fences, hacks and works happily in arena. Call for more details"

The sane and rubber snaffle mouthed bit i am not sure, is this just a special mouth piece for her as she has probably a sensitive mouth or am i missing the whole point of this, any replies or pointers would be appreciated

I would think as a first horse for your daughter it would be better to look for one with more experience.
Ideally find one that has been in a home doing a variety of activities, taking on an inexperienced horse can be very rewarding but not in my opinion for first time owners.

there is no way i would put a child regardless of experience on an ex racer.

TBH its a wonderful thing you are looking to do - but please get the daughter on board to choose her own, under the guidance of someone experienced.

I would also involve your daughter in the selection of her first horse. Bear in mind it will be a partnership, so it is important that she 'clicks' with the horse.

The needs more schooling and competent rider bit would indicate this horse would not suit a first time owner coupled with the ex-racehorse and i'm afriad it's a recepie awaiting unless she has 24-7 backup from very competent friends. She would really need to try any horse to see if it would suit.

As the proud mum of an ex racer I would say that they are wonderful but a LOT of work and worry - maybe consider something a bit more straightforward for your daughter who will have school etc to think about as well?
Also - as a girl whose parents never took her horse shopping despite years of begging - I would echo the suggestion to involve her in picking the horse. It's part of the experience!:p

I have ridden numerous ex racers and despite them in whole being lovely and relatively well mannered, when they had a strop you sure did know about it! I rode an ex hurdler for a couple of years and was amazing, but because of his history show jumping and xc he would either take off 3 strides too early or so close to the jump, I'm surprised he snapped his feet up in time! You need to be experienced and prepared to expect the 'unexpected' so a more experienced been there done that horse may be more suitable.

Thanks for the info and thoughts, from everyone.aaSo took this one of the list
Looking at a few others, as need to buy prob here in Northern ireland, or maybe just over the border in Ireland, have a couple of others i have been looking at, once i have them shortlisted will prob take daughter with us.
reason i have not said to her , is she would want a horse that is for sale at the stables, she looks after it, and rides it for the owners, as both the owner and her daughters are a scared to ride it, kids call it the Devil horse, as it is quite a difficult ride, but daughter loves it, spoke to the instructor about it, and she said it had to many issues with it, and would not recommend it, so need a few to checkout, so my daughter will see other horses
