Ive put my lot on low suagar diet of kwik beet, linseed andminerals but the old pony who is on prascend pretty much refuses to eat it even with mint in it. He always used to be on senior mix, chaff, beet before. What can i feed as a compromise?

Try Dengie healthy hooves (not the Spillers happy hoof) - my oldie was banging on his door and turning down blue chip and all sorts to get Healthy Hooves in his bowl. He normally goes off feeds too after a few weeks but we have managed 3 years so far with HH. Happy hoof is fine too but mine dont like it much, the Healthy Hooves seems more moist and nutty and smells stronger/nicer. Its only about £12 -14 a bag so worth a try.

Spiller's high fibre cubes are extremely palatable and also low sugar - they'll tempt most horses to eat anything :) Also they can be soaked into a mash if needs be :)

There's the Allan & Page Fast fibre, they also do veteran vitality which is good for weight gain, but may be a little too high in starch / sugar.

Prascend suppresses the appetite for the first couple of weeks, so could it be that? Otherwise a lot of horses have to be weaned off cereals and onto beet based feeds. I found a small sprinkle of mix in the top got their interest and from then on it was reduced until they regarded unmollassed beet as their staple diet. I also use Top Spec Cool Condition pellets and Grazon grass nuts for my IR old lady

Rowan and Barbary do a feed called Solutions Mash now - very low in sugar and starch - but be warned, if your horse doesn't like garlic, dont' bother - it stinks of garlic!
