I feel my horse needs more "oomph"/sparkle, but NOT weight! I can't quite decide which route to go down...
My horse is a 13yo Irish mare, with the typical saggy ex-broodmare belly that makes her look fat even if she isn't. She is lacking topline at the moment (horrible weedy neck, spine protruding a tiny bit more than I'd like, and quarters have little muscle) although I'm working on that by building her work up slowly and getting her to use herself properly whenever I'm on her. She's currently doing an average of an hour's walking (45-90 mins) out hacking, and the occasional tiny trot when the ground is good with a view to upping the trot work once the ground is softer. She doesn't do anything else as she is semi-retired, and she hacks like this four or five times a week. Hopefully more now we have more light after work.

She is being fed 300g Alfa-A Lite and 500g TopSpec Lite, once a day. This is a recent change and she is finally starting to put on muscle without fat on this diet and looks healthy and happy on it.

She's always been on the lazy side, but I now feel it's holding her back as I am constantly having to chase her (if I give her one huge kick, it only lasts for about 30 seconds and I spend the entire ride booting/beating her every 30 seconds, or nagging every stride!) I know I cannot change her temperament with feeding, but I do feel she needs a little more quick release energy.
Would adding a small amount of oats to her feed be total overkill on something in such light work?!

I have thought about Propell/similar but not sure if I can feed it with the TopSpec as it has so many vits and mins in it (and I am NOT dropping the TopSpec

)
Or should I give her more Alfa-A/try "normal" Alfa-A/Alfa-A Oil (not keen on this idea though as I assume it would put more weight on her?)

Suggestions welcome!

If you call someone like Spillers or Baileys then they can be very helpful in giving you some sound advise on what would be best for her type and workload.
I used to feed an old lump of mine who needed a bit extra 'oomph' Baileys Low Cal for the vits and mins and no added weight gain and then added some oats. He was fine with this and looked and went very well although he was around the same sort of age but in harder work and was hunted once or twice a month.

Not sure how much help this'll be, but I do know that some companies sell feed supplements to "pick up" horses, to give them that extra sparkle. =D

There is no such thing as energy for oomph and a seperate energy for weight gain. Basically, if the energy fed is not used for maintenance and exercise then it is layed down as fat. Having said that within energy you get quick release forms, where the energy is released quicker into the blood stream following digestion and slow release energy, which is released slowly. Quick release energy comes from cereals and slow release is fibre and oil. Further on from that different cereals release their energy at different rates too. Maize is highest in energy, then barley, then oats but the energy from oats is released quicker. Hence why they have a reputation for giving fizz/oomph.

So, in answer to your question (at last!), you could feed a small amount of oats to give you more oomph. But if this extra energy is not used up for exercise then it will be turned into fat.

I used to feed my lazy cob Spillers Instant Response, great stuff. Just feed on the day of exercise. My pony became so forward going that no legs were needed, but he was still sane

I feed Dengie naked oats. Believe it or not a 50ml meassure for breakie and tea has made an incredible amount of difference and mine now has more staying power as well. Add to that I bought a sack last September, split it between two sealable buckets (keeping one at home in the understairs cupboard) and I will only be buyiing my second sack next week. A little really does go a long way. Give them a ring....they are really helpful
