iv found myself in a bit of a financial crisis, and im going to have to give my horse up, i dont want to just give him to anyone, and im not having much look selling him as he's 17 and its putting people off, so i was wondering if there are any adoption places that would take him, so i know he has a nice home for life. im in county durham area. thanks
edit...he is rideable 110% traffic, box, clip, shoe etc

wigglypigs-not been selfish at all- at least i care about my horse and want the best for him. he was neglected before i got him and was skin and bone so i dont want him to fall into the wrong hands because someone wants a free horse or very cheap. so i suggest you shut the can of worms. was only asking

There are no charities taking in horses (except for rescue) at the moment, that I know of. There are alot of people in your situation right now

Can you not sell him/ give him to a friend as a companion?

Is he rideable? is he safe?? with a few more details maybe people could come up with suggestions?

Opening a can of worms here im sure BUT personally i think its selfish and irresponsable to think that a rescue centre will be able to take a horse that you can no long afford. I think these organisations should be reserved for rescue cases only as god knows there are plenty of them about (eg carrot and spud )
IMO if you can no longer keep your horse or find a suitable home for him yourself them you owe it to them to have them PTS as they could end up anywhere.

^^^ what they said... BUT... if you're worried about someone just wanting a free horse, why not put him out on loan? if he's safe, there will be people willing to bite your arm off for him. take a look at ProjectHorse... people pay quite a lot of money for some quite serious projects. i'm sure you could find him a lovely home.
let the (overrun) rescue places deal with real rescue cases. they're all busting at the seams already.

if you ask on here, i bet there'll be someone who knows someone who might be interested.

I don't think it's selfish... sounds to me like you are looking after number one (or in this case, your horse) which is a natural survival instinct when times get tough. You're trying to think of ways to secure him a safe, loving future, which is what we'd all like for our horses... there are lots that just sell to dealers, etc. with no care of where their horses end up... IMO your search for a better home is more decent than that!

Yes there are rescue cases needing help, but does that mean this sound 17 yr old horse (which isn't really all that old), possibly with a lot of love still to give, deserves any less of a future? I don't believe so. It's a hard time re. money situations at the moment and people have found themselves in sudden, unexpected situations... it's nobodies fault and it's natural for a horse owner to want the best for their horse!

Sorry I can't be of more help rs25, but I hope you find somewhere for your boy to live the rest of his days. Although I agree that perhaps putting him on loan or selling him very cheap and vetting any potential buyers thoroughly may be a better option.

rach pm me if you like - I know someone who is looking for another horse/pony for her son. 5* home, she looks after my horses and i trust her with implicitly.
I need to know a few more details first to see if he is suitable though

I don't know all the ins and outs of previous posts but surely this horse could end up being a rescue case should the owner let him go to an unsuitable home.
Maybe you would prefer the horse to be starved a little first and then be allowed to be rescued.

I am sure the poster is in a bad situation if she can no longer afford her horse and from the opening post sounds like she cares enough about him.
If the horse was unwell with lots of medical problems or very old then pts may be the only option but sounds like he is rideable and sound.
I never realised that some forum members on here think pts is an option for a sound horse that has got a use in life still just because his owner no longer has money??

Hmm I never once said that he could not be rehomed. I said if the OP could not find him a suitable home i didnt think it was fair for a rescude centre to have to take him.

I also take great offence at yout comment about 'prefering the horse to be starved first and then be rescused' ???? I dont think my post indicated i was 'pro intentional abuse' in anyway??!!?? As stated would have horse PTS first as IMO its the least i could do as would NEVER want them to have to suffer!

Also I do think that at 17 a horse still has many years to give so id investigate VictoriaEDT's kind suggestion of someone that may be interested.
