We have a 505 & our tow vehicle used to be OH's pick up. Unfortunately it was his company car & he was made redundant in January, so now we have nothing to tow it with.
He now has a few applications in the pipeline & a couple are looking quite good so hopefully by the end of the month he he may well have a job. BUT none are going to give acompany car suitable for towing so I have to decide whether to buy a tow vehicle or a lorry.
Luckily we have a savings policy that has just matured so cash will be available.

I have a long drive to work so if I get a 4x4 it will be an extra car & I will keep my 1.0 Corsa to commute, but it would mean we have 3 cars & 17 yo son could borrow the Corsa evenings/weekends without me being left transportless.

If I get a lorry we only have 2 cars, but I think HP would travelk better (he gets very sweaty travelling & can on occasion be a *@! to load). Also we could offer transportless friends a lift. Can't with the Ifor as HP hates travelling with the central partition in.

Whichever option I go for it will be at the lower end of the market - lorry under £10k, 4x4 possibly a cheaper Pajero or Four Track.

Currently we would be using at least 2/3 times per month ( or rather would if had transport!) but if son goes to uni away from home use would decrease a lot (but he may werll not go away). Really can't make up my mind what is best.

Personally I much prefer having a lorry. I think most horses travel better in them and you've got somewhere to get changed and put all your things.

Very tempted by the lorry option myself, but OH is arguing strongly for the 4x4 & trailer - using the snow this winter as justification & he does have a point as my commute is largely country roads. The other potential problem is I'm not sure there will be space at the yard so storage may be a problem but a 4x4 could be parked on the road at home (as OH has so annoyingly pointed out).
Trouble is I can see big advantages & disadvantages to both options & it really is marginal either way unless someone can come up with the killer argument!

If you have a trailer and you are happy with it maybe best to get a cheap 4X4 see what hapens with OHs job then maybe get a lorry later on ???

I won't be buying anything until OH has a job, just trying to decide best option so I can have the research done & move quickly as soon as we can. I suspect we woill end up looking for both options & whichever comes up first we will go with.
