Red had accident today, jumped 5 bar gate, wont get in to it but he has a 3x1" patch on near side hind inside cannon bone where hair and skin has come off, looks very gory and a few cuts on both legs.

I cold hosed legs and hosed the cuts to get all blood and debris off them and then sprayed with green teramicin spray and left open to dry up. Have i done the right thing or should i have bandaged?

There is a bit of heat which i suppose should be expected but no swelling or obvious lameness in walk. I plan on turning him out tomorrow to walk it off as he will be really stiff.

I tried to get some bute down him but he wouldnt eat his tea! He was happily munching away on hay though and happy and bright, resting alternate legs so i think there may be some bruising but obviously cant see much under fur.

Any reassurance or advice would be welcomed guys

As long as where he is staying tonight is dry and clean leaving it open to dry wont hurt. I will bet that by tomorrow there is some swelling, getting out to walk on it will help take that down but you may have to bandage to help get rid of swelling. If you do I would make sure you put some furacin or hibitain or something on the wound if it is leaking or still open other wise it will dry and stick to the bandage...when you take it off it will hurt.

Otherwise just keep it clean and watch for puss or scar tissue forming.

Yes you did the right thing. Bandaging wont actually grt rid of swelling but if used early enough can help prevent it. I had a horse that wouldn't eat bute so I had speciall syinge form in for him but I had run out one day & so I mixed it with peppermint cordial till it was a paste & then mixed it into a small amount of feed till he had eaten it then gave him the rest of his feed!! I'm a big beliver in conning them if it makes my life easier!
As you said walking round will help get the stiffness off & reboost the circulation so aid healing & reduce swelling. Though if turning out I would prob dry dress & bandage to stop any muck getting in but keep an eye on him to make sure that if the awelling does go down the bandages dont get loose & cause another insident.
